Ok, so first question for this thread is probably laughable for most Audioholics members, but........ Is the RL speaker orientation standard defined when facing the speaker from the seating position or facing the seating position from the speaker?

I'm preparing to purchase my first surround system as I prepare to repatriate after 20+ years working over seas in the Power/Mining/Oil and Gas industries as an Engineer and Project Controls Manager.

I've pretty much decided to purchase the Denon AVR-X3600H and a set of Paradigm Premier 800Fs. I'm going to be looking for some guidance on rears and sides, plus understanding the external power 2ch power amp thing on the Denon. That will come later.

My (new house) recreation room has new LVT floors, new dimming lights in ceiling, nothing on walls and will have some type of furniture and a pool table. Room dimensions are approximately 12'W X 25'L with fireplace on side wall.

Going to have lots of questions about speakers, tuning, acoustic treatment and test equipment for sound........... :)

Welcome to AH! I believe you got this, you Definitely
have a grasp on the HT thing. Good choice on your AVR it’s a good one and your room is a good size to.
I’m sure you looked into a good sub? 15” would be a good size for a room that big. Are you going to do Atmos? 5.1.4 or 5.2.4? or 7.1 or 7.2 maybe 11.1? But Atmos and DTS-X is the newest surround Format. What HD TV size your gonna have? Get to know some of the guys in here, PENG, KEW, LTHD, umm ADTG these guys have a ton of Knowledge audio/video hit them up.

In answer to first question, the Left & Right speaker orientation standard is from seating position when facing the speakers.

We are willing to answer some questions you may have, but you can also find a great quantity of answers by browsing the various threads which have already been posted in the years over which this site has been active.

Wow, thanks for the replies gents and the welcome to AH!

Eventually I think I'm going to want to expand to the full capability of the AVR-X3600H, so from what I understand now that would probably be 7.2.4. I'm thinking of starting out 5.1.2 if that' possible? I'm not sure if I'll worry about Atmos in the beginning, so maybe only 5.1 or 5.2 to start. Looking for some guidance here....

Need to find a good sub and rears to compliment the Paradigms and hoping I can get something worthwhile for around $2K all in. Any suggestions would be welcome here.

So the Denon is $900 and the Paradigms are $2K and another $2K for sub and rears puts me at around $5K for the starting 5.1 surround system. That should be good right?

Gmoney,,,,, you said I Definitely had a grasp on the HT thing.......... I'm not sure you were correct because I can't figure out what HT means in your compliment?? :)

Thanks again guys, I'm loving the AH forum already. (I'm sitting in China watching the rest of the world deal with the Covid-19 virus that we've been dealing with for two months now.... !!!! Be safe!!!

It's a nasty virus that spreads quite easily and has somewhere around a 1% death rate, which is about 100 times the normal flu viruses in the US every year. (1% versus .1%)

What we saw was that folks could be spreading it before they had any symptoms or knew they were sick, so that makes it a bit dangerous as well. Probably no one has much immunity to it because it seems to be a new type of virus.

Until the government gets a handle on stopping transmission, try and stay out of public places with high population densities, wash your hands FEQUENTLY, and by all means take this serious if you have any underlying health conditions, especially related to respiratory ailments!

On the bright side, lots of people have recovered from it and there are minor cases of infection, so if you are healthy and contract it, it probably not the end of the world for you.

Again, it is highly contagious in the right circumstances of close contact with someone that has it.

Our original mortality rate was 2% as generally reported, they've now bumped that up into the "3s". Thanks for the insight!
