Both. All room acoustic problems are caused by reflections off the walls, floor, and ceiling. These reflections skew the frequency response, and also add echoes, excess ambience, and ringing. So by absorbing the reflections, the sound in the room becomes more true to what's coming out of the loudspeakers.
