i think my question was very vague so I'll try again to explain it better. im get a satellite dish in a few days with the dvr. dish network tells me the dvr won't record one show while watching another one but if i have two TV's hooked up to it then it will. what im trying to get at is why can't my vcr be the second tuner or is this old school and won't work? do i need to get dvd recorder? open for suggestions. BTW this is one great site for the a/v challenged like myself
thanks in advance

Whoever told you that is smoking crack!

You can record 2 programs at the same time while watching one live on the DVR, or record 2 programs and watch a previous recorded show. You can't use your VCR to view channels because it is not a decoder, but you can take the 2nd output from the DVR to the VCR to save programs to tape. Get a DVR, your world will change forever. I got one only about 6 months ago...man what a change. Forget about recording programs on the VCR forever. You set up the programs you want to record, or set up a season pass which will record all the programs for that show. No more forgetting to set the VCR, no more missed episodes. You will love it.

Hope that helps
:D

Should be able with the right system to watch one and record another or record two at the same time.

Most VCR's tune analog cable channels at best.

Digital cable and satellite channels are most likely out of range of most of 'em.

So, unless your VCR can receive these channels, you need a separate means of receiving them.

the vcr answer is that it is unlikely... others have said that it will let you record and watch at the same time however this is only true if it has a dual tuner... mine does however my neighbors doesnt so thats something to check.
