Hey folks,

I got a Boston Acoustics VR 920 for $100 on eBay!!! The only problem is that it has these gloss black sides that appear to be a plastic veneer applied to MDF that have come loose. Is it possible to re-glue the veneer to the wood?

I have some Gorilla Glue at home. Will that work?

Any tips or tricks as to how I should do it?

That is the trouble with plastic veneer. If you can get a panel off that is looseit will help. You have to get off the old glue in any event. Acetone will help remove it, plus razor blades. Be careful not to cut into the MDF.

The correct adhesive, is an impact adhesive. Apply to both surfaces and let it dry to the sticky stage, past the wet stage. This usually takes 20 to 40 minutes, depending on the drying conditions. Now reapply the veneer and tap with firm gentle taps with a soft hammer. You won't get it apart after that.

Thanks for the help.

The weird thing is that I don't see any glue, either on the wood or the back of the veneer. I have peeled both sides off completely. So I guess all I need to do is just try to re-glue it as you suggest.

I bet there is a thin layer of glue. They probably used a heat sensitive glue. I would give it a good wipe down with acetone, before re gluing with impact adhesive.

Ive used spray adhesive. I masked off the edges where the veneer was peeling from and sprayed the adhesive lightly and evenly as far in as i could. Wait a about 30 seconds for the adhesive to get tacky then press the veneer back onto the surface. Wipe of the excess that squeezed out and place weight on top of your work untill the adhesive cures fully. Remove the weight and rub off the "boogers".

The plastic veneer sounds like a laminate like Formica. If that is the case the solution is a piece of cake. Contact cement is the adhesive and laquer thinner disolves that glue. Put some in a spray bottle and spray it into the carack while gently lifting and peel it back another inch or so. Let the laquer thinner dry/evaporate for 15 minutes and then respray contact cement back in there. Home depot has a 3M Super 77 or 90 that will work. After that tacks up (15 min) push the surfaces back together and rub 'em with a piece of wood to make sure you get contact. Clean the over spray with laquer thinner.
