<font color='#000000'>Several years ago I purchased a Denon AVP-8000 Pre-Pro. Immediately upon powering it up for the first time, I found that it produced a high level of noise through my main speakers (Klipschorns). “High Level” meaning that I could discern a noticeable hiss from the speakers during quiet passages. The problem was much less pronounced in analog bypass mode, but still present. After lengthy discussions with Denon, it was concluded (by them) that the noise level was “normal”, and that the sensitivity of my speakers made the noise more apparent than the majority of other user’s systems.

Because of it’s outstanding 5.1 performance, and the fact that the noise was hardly noticeable in analog bypass mode, I decided to keep the unit. After time, I became aware that the AVP-8000’s bass performance (while in analog bypass) was a bit lacking. Eventually, I relegated my music CD listening to my 20 year old Sansui AU-517 integrated amplifier, utilizing it’s pre-amp section as an input to my Bryston 9B-ST  amplifier. Although the Denon had fallen short of it’s originally intended roles as a music and movie Pre-Pro, I was happy with the total system. That is….until now.

Recently, the noise level in both modes has increased significantly, to the point that it is distracting. Never impressed by the 2CH music characteristics of the AVP-8000, and discovering that it is now discontinued, I have decided it is time for a new Pre-Pro.

Armed with the learnings from the AVP-8000, I have put together a wish list for my new Pre-Pro;

* Exceptionally low noise in analog and digital modes
* Audiophile performance in 2CH analog bypass (with a deep-tight bass characteristic)
* Stellar 5.1 performance
* Individually adjustable bass management for each speaker
* Broadcast quality video switching
* Integrated FM tuner
* Software upgrade capabilities
* $4,000 maximum price point

Although I had spent significant time researching the AVP-8000, I was less than pleased by it’s overall performance (i.e. high noise and less than ideal musical quality). Now faced with the task of finding a replacement, I want to be careful not to have the same experience. Unfortunately, I find that the vast majority of reviews are slanted to the manufactures. Case-and-point, the Sunfire Theater Grand III. The reviews I found spoke highly of this unit. It was not until I read the Audioholics review that I found any negatives. After reading that review, the TGIII is definitely off my list. (Dodged that bullet….thank heavens.)

Impressed by what appears to be a truly unbiased review criteria, I have focused on the Audioholics reviews of several Pre-Pro’s and receivers. From that effort, I have concluded that the Integra Research RDC-7  appears to be the closest match for my requirements. (The Denon AVR-5803 loks tempting, but having been stung by Denon once, I am leary to tread that path again, especially since I would be bypassing it’s amp section in lieu of my Bryston.) Even so, I realize that at that price point, there are a large number of Pre-Pro’s and receivers that are worth considering.

Not wanting to repeat the experience I had with the AVP-8000, I am seeking suggestions from users that have personal (real world) experience with Pre-Pro’s (or even receivers) that might fulfill my requirements. To that end, I would appreciate your input as to the performance of the RDC-7, and/or alternate suggestions for a Pre-Pro (or receiver) that would fulfill my needs. Bear in mind, the efficiency of my Klipshorns make low noise a major criteria.

Thank you for whatever help you may be able to offer,
