He heard about THX certification and he tried to have his setup conform to standards given by the THX website.

These are his results:

He's wondering if you guys have any suggestions on improving the image quality of his setup. His television is a Samsung LN46A650 46-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LCD

He says he has it calibrated and also has all the hdmi cables and whatnot. He acknowledges that his sound system is poor, but he claims there is nothing he can do about it. He says he is currently content.

He wants to know if he should sit closer or further from the tv. He would also love to hear any other things he could do to improve his viewing experience.

Thankies!

Your brother is beyond help, he is using Bose speakers. If he gets rid of those the picture quality of his Samsung should improve 4 fold.

It's incredibly difficult or impossible to calibrate an LCD television to meet THX standards. Most of them simply don't have the dark levels and contrast ratio necessary to be calibrated in such a way. If he wants THX standards he'll need to get a projector or a plasma television.

Hey Sunny,
Seth is right, Bose speakers are major no-no here, but I guess I can give few ideas...
Imho he seats way too close to his (nice) TV, but given his small room ( I assume) first of all I'd hang this flat panel on the wall.
Before trying to match THX video recommendations, I'd make sure my audio setup meets Dolby 5.1 recommendations (IE - reposition the speakers)
Also get cheap radioshack SPL meter (try ebay for even cheaper) and make sure you set all speakers to small (sub is must have in eyes of THX) and speakers to 75 Db...

LOL!!! Seth=L:D
It's almost quote worthy isn't it.:D

I know, I know, I'm being self righteous. Of course we all know the first step to recovery is to admit there's a problem, and that problem is Bose!

Sorry, can't help me self.:D

One of my employees was in my office this morning talking about how good Bose speakers are... I almost fired him.:D

I wouldn't fire him, I'd just let him know there's a special place reserved in hell for people that like Bose.
