You're gonna have to go listen to some stuff if you want the best answer. 10 replies yields 10 different answers here. That said, the HK doesnt belong in that group and there are possibly some others you should consider...

Unfortunately, going and listening to stuff, even in big cities is getting harder and harder to do. ESP with a laundry list like that. That might could take a whole day, and even then you prob wouldn't have every option available.

On this forum you'd get these recommendations.

Ascend Acoustics
Infinity Primus
Behringer 2030ps
SVS
TSC

Outside of that there isn't a lot in the budget range.

I'm assuming that most of these fall in the same price range, yes? Have you heard any of them? What did you like/dislike about what you heard?
I haven't heard the Def tech or the Energy systems, but I have heard the others - in order of MY preference is would go:

1.) Polk
2.) Boston Acoustics
3.) H/K

Well then he might as well just draw one from a hat. He's got speakers there all over the spectrum. We could at least use a starting ground. Even if he listened to one, we could make an educated guess.

You'll be hard pressed to find anyone who has heard all of these.

You might be able to get opinions on a few but even then, I doubt that anyone has listened to them for any great length of time, much less in a compariative environment. And, even then, their opinion might be somewhat biased.

The best I can say is to try 'em all, one at a time, and make sure they have a liberal return policy and keep ALL packing materials and receipts.

heres an opinion...

rating all of these will be tough, but I can give you my professional opinion, based on what ive heard, I would narrow it to the def tech and the energy, both sound and look sweet. Dont forget to look at Paradigm. Of couse the curve ball here is that what sounds great to one may sound horrible to another, but Im confident that this is some good guidance for you- find a local retailer for both, grab some HQ demo material ( again, purely subjective...) and go take a few listens. Make sure and ask if the speakers are fully broken in, and that the power systems are at least comparable. hope this helps ! If your reeeaallly short on time, check the return policy and get the one you like.
