What will they think up next?

It's not like they're saying that because of discrimination, minorities are more likely to suffer more once they have cancer......... No..not that!! They're saying that discrimination causes cancer!!

This kind of story runs from the same vein as the many "place your weather phenomenon here is caused by manmade global warning."....and the many other silly scientific conclusions drawn by todays
'so called' scientific community.

You know what I mean.... these are the silly scientific studies that always seem to conclude to findings such as......... "increasing cell phone usage may be linked linked to decreasing Oregon bear population", and stupid stuff like that.

These types of silly reports that seem to be everywhere these days....... and they always give me a chuckle........

The title of your thread shows that you don't really understand what this article or the scientists are saying. All studies like this are correlational and something they drill into your head when in intro statistics courses is correlation is NOT equal to causation. The fact that the two items are related could or could not have anything to do with each other but that doesn't make for a good headline so reported make it seem more concrete so people who don't understand what they are reading think it is a cause-effect relationship.

That's exactly what they're implying............. as do all of these hilariously stupid studies.

The headline says it all...."Racial discrimination tied to breast cancer risk"

It doesnt take a rocket scientist to add 2+2 to understand their message.

I "ham up" many of my news article titles as well... if anything it exposes the bias of the author of the article (as do my frequently opinionated titles). Getting to the meat of the content then determines what the facts (if any are presented sufficiently enough) say about the meat of the issue.

In this case, however, the title plus the intro sentence pretty much sums up what Buckeye_Nut implied - these people are crackpots... but labels aside, that stress is a potential factor.

Well it is yahoo news, you can't expect much of a highly technical medical summary of a research article. The real problem is these news writers catering to people who don't understand what they are reading and want yes or no answers nothing in between. It seems due to our fast pace culture the majority wants to be told the answer rather than thinking for themselves so the news people cater by as you say hamming it up.

My young grasshopper.... you have much to learn about how news stories are disseminated:)

Reuters is the source of the story(not yahoo), and you might find links to the exact same article on many competing websites. Yahoo is merely a single means of many for dissemination...... or transport, if you will. Is the Reuters news source not credible or reliable you ask??? Heck no they aren't reliable, but Reuters lack of reliability wasnt my point;) LOL

Reuters is not the source of the study itself. They're merely reporting the findings made by a bunch of crackpot pseudo-scientists. When such pseudo-science results support a desired mindset and can be used as a tool to help propagate such thinking,.......such findings will always be publicized.

Much of what comes from Reuters, AP, etc, etc, etc, and friends is pure rubbish, but I do believe their material provides for some good entertainment value and a few laughs.

Don't you agree???

Thanks for informing me of that one I wasn't aware. Generally my view on news is read it and then find the original source if possible and I care enough (in this case the journal article).

I would have to agree with you on the ridiculousness of their article though.

You're very welcome:D

Now that you know this, you'll often notice the exact same stories linked-to on many competing websites. At the top in parentheses....... you'll see who penned the story.

This is the reference to the source of the study itself....per the article.

It's possible that racial discrimination plays some role, according to the researchers, led by Dr. Teletia R. Taylor of Howard University in Washington, D.C.

They report their findings in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

That would make Dr. Taylor & friends at Howard University my accused crackpots.....LOL

It has also been reported that people (usually African Americans) who live in poorer neighborhoods don't receive the same more advanced medical treatments & prescriptions as others do.

I have no doubt that some of this is true. But it is also true that those people are also hurting themselves because they would rather blame racial discrimination, then to make a more aggressive effort to receive good medical care.

I have some in my family who make these claims & I tell them to get a new doctor! They have jobs & belong to HMO's so there is no reason to stay with a doctor who you feel doesn't listen to you or who you think isn't giving you adequate care!

I put in a request to have my mother get a new doctor because she complained that she felt he wasn't listening to her. When she went in for her appointment and asked her why she was changing MD's, she told him the truth! HE CHANGED HIS ATTITUDE & CARE FOR THE BETTER.

He took careful & wonderful care of my mother for the rest of her life!

Not everyone is in the same circumstance, but it is a lot easier now to get better care then ever before, you just have to be willing to go & get it for yourself!

I have received many dirty looks from people over the years. And now I have to wear glasses! Coincidence? I think not.

Being left-handed seems to carry the burden of a multi-year LESS than average lifespan (9 years?). I'm left-handed. Who can I blame that on?! My left-handed parents aren't here anymore to complain to, natch. Soooo, I'm gonna blame biased tool makers. (I never could get an honest reason for the clockwise tightening of screws. And don't get me started about scissors. ;))

Maybe I'll write an article for JAMA and sue Sears and engage the assistance of the N.A.A.L-H.P.

It's simple 'Race-Baiting' and there is plenty of money to be made by perpetuating it. Ask Jessie Jackson or Al Sharpton.
Yahoo News didn't write the story. It's from Reuters Health. (As Buckeye pointed out)

I'm a left handed golfer who's been trending towards hitting a big sweeping hook into the right rough recently, so I called Dr. Teletia R. Taylor of Howard University to perform a scientific study on my behalf.

I am sad to announce that Dr. Taylors team contacted me this morning with the conclusion of their study, and I have learned that my 'hook' has a direct link to colon cancer. As you can imagine, I am very depressed because I love to play golf very much..... but is playing the game I love worth risking possible death by colon cancer???

As you can imagine, this is a very sad day indeed. Dr. Taylor suggested I open my stance and clubface a bit to propagate a fade, but to be very careful because the Howard University team warned me that if my fade turns into a big banana slice........... I might contract prostate cancer!!!!

If Buckeye ever gets cancer it'll be a progressive tumor that starts in his left lung that doctors will try to treat with liberal amounts of chemo.

I think your headline and summary do injustice to the article.

The word "cause" does not appear once in the article. They said there's a connection - and their obviously is according to their data. The last line clearly states that more studies are needed to determine what the connection itself is.

I suggest you actually go read it, then rethink your wild, arm-waving, offtopic rant.

yes jonny... It's true.....

Many people can read an article, and have absolutely no idea what message was just delivered.

.........of course, unless it's spelled out for them in a direct kind of way..... in a 1st grade reading comprehension level.

Just a thought

I wonder if those 'non-bias' :rolleyes:scientists also looked for a 'connection' between Affirmative Action programs and cancer?
Since that is also a form of discrimination.
I would like to see the questions from their study.
The one or two they showed appeared to be very 'leading' questions.
Could it be they had an agenda?
