Quietest place on Earth mutes all sounds, messes with your head

If you've been to a crowded airport, sporting event, or even a kid's birthday party lately, a little peace and quiet might sound like the perfect thing to help you kick back and relax. Just don't let things get too quiet, or you might drive yourself a wee bit insane: the anechoic chamber at Orfield Laboratories in Minnesota can mute 99.99% of all sound, but visiting the silent oasis isn't as calming as you might expect.Quietest place on Earth mutes all sounds, messes with your head | Unplugged - Yahoo! I can attest to the eerie effect of sound depravation.

There was a specific meeting room my previous office building, with no outside view, heavily carpeted floor and absorbent wall panels... After the aircon turned off, the room was soothing at first, then creepy and that is with the lights on, just no external sound. Initially, it is soothing but over time, a sense of isolation comes on thick. Suddenly the laptop fan is unreasonably loud, the chair squeak is bothersome... Have to step out for a break.

OTOH, I have IEM's with 30dB attenuation and they pretty much cut out most sound. With no music playing, I can almost not hear my dogs barking in the other room and so it is very quiet with them on. Somehow, I don't have the sense of isolation and creep factor the conference room had.

Mind over matter, I guess.
