I'm looking to replace my current player and need a unit that is exceptionally quiet (the TV is near my couch). Ideally I'd like to buy a DVD recorder, but I've heard the fans on those are fairly noisy. Is this true? And if it is could someone recommend me a regular DVD player that is quiet and ideally has a USB plugin to play video files off either a flash stick or external hard drive (although this feature isn't necessary). Thanks.

My Philips upconverting 3475/37 DVD recorder is fairly quiet. (It's definitely more so than my jet engine Magnavox MRV700 with a VHS recorder.) This is the version of the 3475/37 without a hard drive. I have yet to hear any consumer electronic with a hard drive that isn't noisy.

The Samsung BDP-1500 is a quiet Blu-Ray player and upconverter that has no fan. It is allegedly prone to heat issues.

AFAIK, the only set top DVD players that can play video files off a flash stick are the ones that tend to support DivX. I've never seen a standard DVD player that can play WMV/VC-1, MPEG4/AVC/H.264, RealVideo or even Quicktime files. The DivX logo is fairly common on most DVD players and recorders.

Besides listening to players at Best Buy, another option is to modify the internal fan. Quite a few people have disconnected the internal fans of their devices and replaced them with quieter (and more costly) fans or used a quieter external fan as well.

Are there websites that provide a service where you can send a player in to have the fan replaced with something much more quiet?

And without the record feature are DVD players in general less noisy? I've heard this to be the case before.

You would have to look inside the unit. Generally, when people replace fans they are standard size computer fans inside pro-amplifiers. So you just get a fan with the same draw and the same or better CFM with ball bearings.

Why not use your computer? It's easier to rip the newer DVDs on a computer. Every time they come out with new copyright protection it takes some 10 year old a week to break it and post it on the Internet. For your own personal collection backup, of course ;)

Then just get a regular DVD player for your TV.

Would not having the record feature ensure getting a quiet player? I was looking at the Philips-DVP5960 in particular.

As I stated before the player will be close to my couch and needs to be practically silent because of it. The old Samsung DVD-V2000 I had accomplished this task very well. I need the new player to do the same.

I just did a little more research and the OPPO DV-980H was highly recommended by a few sites. Anyone ever deal with Oppo products before?

I don't know the decible specs of different players, but hard drives make noise. There is a spindle and also a cooling fan.
