So I just 'upgraded' to Quicken Premier 2011 because Intuit has a policy of disabling your internet access for downloading quotes and online updates from financial institutions if your product is 3 years old (I was using Q Premier 2008). Call it 'planned obsolescence' if you will - it's a cheap ploy to force users to upgrade and continue their revenue stream.
I spent the last 3-4 days cleaning up my data file by making sure everything is categorized properly and removing old stuff (I don't think I'll need to run a report to show how many atm withdrawals I made in 2005). So now I have just my investment history, banking/credit card accounts since the beginning of 2010, and a few things necessary to preserve my loan information for a prior car loan and my current home loan. The File Operations -> Copy option can help with the cleanup but of course it's not simple! So all is well and my balances are correct and my history for the things I care about is preserved.
After first installing Q2011, it seemed fine. It properly converted my 2008 data file and some of the features of the new interface are actually nice. Then I installed TurboTax 2010 and the problems began. It may just be a coincidence but who knows.
It doesn't repaint properly. The desktop background shows through various places in the Quicken window. Any program that is on top of Quicken will show Quicken's toolbar menu. Many programs lose their minimize, maximized, and exit buttons. IE now doesn't have a titlebar at all!
Closing Quicken or minimizing it and re-maximizing it does not cause a proper repaint for Quicken and OTHER programs are still affected. This is far worse than the problem with 2008 and other versions that flicker like crazy if the MS Intellimouse driver is installed (naturally that problem has never been fixed although the internet is full of complaints about it). These guys just can't seem to get the UI right.
Quicken is a useful tool, if a bit quirky with some things, but I really wish there were a viable alternative because I'm about ready to end my fifteen year assocation with Quicken.
