Quick question re: Analog Out on BD to Older Receiver

Just a quick question. I have an old Denon AVR 2802 with no HDMI support. It does have 6 CH (5.1) discrete analog inputs.

If I was to get a BD player that supports onboard decoding and 7.1 analog out, would I be able to play HD audio formats?

(I'm thinking of the Oppo 83 or something similar).

Also, would there be anything onboard the player to let it know that I'm only using 5 channels rather than 7?

Yes. This is how I have mine setup with my Oppo and older Marantz. The analog processing has a setup where you tell it what speakers you have or don't have (7.1 is the default for the Oppo), just like a receiver has. I am only running a 5.1 setup also.

Yes, but the 2802 will only support 5.1. First run six analog cables from the source to the corresponding six "EXT IN" jacks on the upper left side, next to the antenna terminals.

Once the source is configured to output to these outputs, you select them on the 2802 by pressing the "EXT IN" button on the remote. This will totally bypass the surround circuitry in the Denon and you may have to fine-tune via the source.
