Hi all.... New here... Just have some questions.

I just purchased a Mitsubishi WD-62725. I never saw the picture before purchasing, but I have seen other models of Mitsu and other brands as well in DLP. I loved the picture, its why I choose a DLP. Well when I got it out of the box and hooked up, the picture seems slightly dark to me and well the picture quality, well, looks like any other tv Ive seen. Now I just have standard cable, do I need to get that new style of cable in order to see a better picture? Or satellite? Is there something I need to change within the settings of the TV? I havent read the manual in full, but even if I did, I prolly wouldnt still know what to do cause most of the terms are a foriegn language to me. If anyone has this tv or just anyone who can spend alittle time helping me out, your time will come with much appreciations. Thanks for reading..

You will certainly want to upgrade to HD cable and although your set has a built in tuner you will likely require an HD receiver from your cable company. As for the picture out of the box, have you tried any calibration - picture, color, black level, etc?. You should invest in a calibration DVD e.g. Avia to help probably calibrate, or perhaps look into hiring a ISF certified installer to perform the calibration for you...should help your picture issues a lot.

Yes, I did check into some of those things listed, but none really cleared up the fuzz ( if thats the term ). Just seemed like the models I seen in the stores were really crisp/sharp. Do most stores have it set up in HD? I would assume so so they can show off the best picture.

Ill check into the calibration DVD like you suggested, and then from there I guess Ill contact my cable company. If Im still not satisfied, I guess Ill look around for a ISF certified installer.

Also, what would be the best/recomended seating back spacing? I know the further I sit the better the picture looks, but that kinda seems to defeat the purpose of a big screen. Right now my couch is 12 feet away, but when Im about 16 the fuzz I mentioned earlier seems to get resolved. Only problem with 16 is that I can get a couch that far back.

Thanks for the help Red.

If you haven't looked at a DVD, digital cable, or HD cable yet, then you really haven't seen what your TV can do yet.

Your old TVs won't look any worse than your current TV, because they all are getting the exact same signal. It is the newer, higher quality signals that HDTV puts out that will give you peace of mind that you made a good purchase.

If you don't even have digital cable yet, then you definitely are not seeing a good image as digital cable at least gives all your old TVs a good clean picture to work with.

HDTV over cable from your local provider is an excellent way to go though and will allow you to get a really nice image up on your TV that you can sit about 1.5 times the screen width away from (at least) for 'optimal' viewing.

Your best option is satellite tv. It has a much better picture than even the best digital cable. On hd satellite is no better, but on the non hd stuff(which is still the majority of what we watch) satellite will blow cable out of the water. There isnt much an isf technician can do to a dlp to make the picture look better. They mainly calibrate crt tv's becaue the lens can be refocused and more finely tuned.

And by the way you have the best dlp on the market so dont worry, when you get satellite it will look awesome.

This is simply not true.

In an A/B comparison between DSS & digital cable, cable provided a much higher quality image on digital HBO than DSS provided with the same feed. There were a few channels where DSS looked marginally better and the majority looked identical.

For HDTV DSS encodes material at 16mbs while cable uses 20mbs which means that cable with HD offers an additional 25% of encoding performance which is significant.

Add to it that you can hook another few TVs directly up to the cable line without an additional charge and that cable carries all the local channels as a standard part of the service plus you pay 10 bucks a month for a digital cable box... call it 20 bucks and throw in DVR compared to the $200 to $700.00+ you will spend on HD DSS equipment (with integrated HD DVR) then it starts to become clear that DSS is not a bargain or a better way to go with service.

DSS being a superior format was accurate a few years ago... but no longer.

SD and many of the so called HD channels will still look bad on a high res display. Proper calibration can help but you may want to look at one of the processors now available if you plan on viewing alot of SD

bmx the quality of your cable picture is dependent on your cable company. All are different. Your statement is probably only based on the cable company in your area. The digital cable company has an awful picture and I can say from experience that satellite looks about 50 percent better. I know this is true in my area because my cable company doesnt send out channels 1-100 digitally even though you have a digital cable box. Only channels above that are digital. I believe this is still the case with the majority of cable companies across the country. With the new cable card I will agree that the cable picture is comprable to that of dss because all channels are digital. They will all be the same in two years.
