Questions, advice regarding Energy 22 Reference Loudspeakers

Hi all!

Since I am new to the forums I will give some info about myself.

I have been into mostly 2 channel audio for about 12 years and currently have a Rotel RB-890 amp, Rotel RC-850 pre, and Paradigm Studio 40s V.3 loudspeakers. I consider myself an enthusiast.

Anyway, to the reason I am posting!

I have purchased Energy 22 Reference speakers for very little cash ($50.00) based on the build quality (1 ¼ inch thick cabinets) and the raw weight. They have extremely rigid cabinets and apparently was Energy’s flagship speaker in 86.

These speakers I found were not horrible sounding, but are certainly not in the same category as my studio 40s. The biggest problem with these speakers (to my ear anyway) is that the mids seem very dark and a tad muddy. They also don’t seem to image particularly well.

I was going to get rid of these speakers, but I just can’t do it. I know I would get nothing for them, so I was wondering two things:

1. Does anyone have specifications for these speakers? I looked and cannot find anything.

2. Are these speakers worth modifying? If so, does anyone have recommendations? Crossover, drivers?

I have never done any modifications to a speaker before, but I have an electronic technician background specifically in analog circuitry and also all the necessary test equipment.

Any help or suggestions are appreciated! :D

The Energy Reference 22's were high end speakers, but the ones you bought are the ESM model which were commonly sold in low-fi stores (Best Buy type of stores)

I had the ESM-4 if I remember correctly and they were horrid sounding speakers, way too bassy and thick sounding. They would not compare well to anything nowadays even Energy's current cheapest offerings, even in their time they were pretty mediocre. I paid about $200 USD back then new I think so they were no means high end speakers.
