I gues it depends on the TV and the box'

My Comcast/Motorola HD box doesn't have a HDMI output but it sends a clean 1080i signal to my TV via three wire component. I know my friends Scientific Atlanta/Cablevision HD box offers the choice of the short lived DVI or three wire component. He's using component as well.

Dunno if it's the boxes or the service provided, but I'll take my Comcast/Motorola over his Cablevision/Scientific Atlanta any day. Non-HD pictures are almost unwatchable on his system. My buddy, who is about as tech savvy as a mackerel can even see the difference, and he ain't pleased.

Yes the cable itself is the same just coloured coded different. But the audio (5.1 analog) would have 6 and not 5 ? I haven't seen component and audio cables with 5  .

Unless he's talking about RGB'S!

The cables that come with such systems like cable boxes have a component stereo audio combo cable. It has red, green, blue, white and red again. RGB for home use passes up to 1080i depending on the source and material used. Once the new HDMI 1.3 spec is fully past you can expect HD-DVD and Blu-Ray to start encoding software with their newest copyright protection that doesn't allow component to pass anything above 480p on their players. Currently you can watch HD-DVDs and Blu-Rays with component and get all the way up to 1080i.

Yes I live in the US..

Some older Monitors had 5 cables for there VGA input...

It was RGB and 2 others... no they were not audio... I could look it up, but I dont think it matters much:)

The only thing Im wondering if my Marantz 7300 which has component inputs would pass HDTV components...

Not a big deal, since the TV I am using has 2 HDMI, 2 Components and a few other wirers... So I will be able to plug in my HTPC, and other components right into the TV... They have DVI->HDMI so thats cool too:)

They say HDMI is backwords compatable... so we SHOULD be able to get these DVD players when the Unified ones come out, and the price becomes reasonable.

Until then, Im happy with Standard Definition DVD's...

I just cant see them forcing HDMI 1.3 for atleast 10 years... they got to support all the TV's out right now...

I think you may have some interfaces mixed up.

HDMI is an interface that uses a high brandwidth digital smart connection using a cable. Version 1.3 is capable of carrying HD video and HD sound on just one cable.

HD-DVD, Blu-Ray, and network television cable and satelite networks now use HDMI with their components.

DVD's will play on next generation formats HD-DVD's and Blu-Ray's players. They also upconvert Standard DVDs to 1080i. However you can't watch any Blu-Ray disks on your current DVD player and there are very few dual-format HD-DVD/ Standard DVD discs out and don't expect many of them.

HD-DVD and Blu-Ray use a blue laser to read data where DVD uses a red laser. Since our old DVD players lack this, and many other important parts, they are unable to read HD-DVDs and Blu-Rays.

I am not sure what you mean by "Unified ones", but you can be sure that HD-DVD and Blu-Ray won't join forces, and there were talks of combo players that would handle both formats but they have yet to arive and I hear discouraging words that indicate they may never come out. So the only way you can play both of them is to have a HTPC with a Blu-Ray and HD-DVD driver in it, at least for now.

I use an old 22" NEC monitor and it has the 5 wire component video. I live in Canada... I don't know if it's Canadian thing like the Robertson Screwdriver. In Canada you can pick up 5 and 3 cable component video cables, although the 5 cable is getting harder to find.

I assume he means component and stereo audio cables.
I believe this is the old style rgb cable connectors(r,b,g,?,?) 5 cables for video only. My brothers older infocus pj has them in addition to composite, s-vid, and dvi/m1.

5 wire cables would be RGBHV - red, green, blue, horizontal sync, vertical sync.
