Question Re: DV-F07

I'm curious, I got really lucky and managed to only pay $350 for my Pioneer Elite DV-F07 player a month or so back and I've been pretty happy with it. I've only been unhappy with a few of the things on it considering it retail pricing.

For a newer player, I am really surprised it doesn't support HDMI output and the on-screen interface is heavily lacking in my opinion. However, I noticed one inconsistency as shown on Pioneer's specification sheet as shown on the website ( Link ). IF you scroll down, it says that under the audio terminals section that the DV-F07 does not have an Optical output, yet when I look at the back of mine it most certianly does. Not to mention the user manual describes using it.

I suppose my question is will I notice a performance increase in switching to the optical cable, which will go into my Pioneer Elite VSX-94TXH? The reciever specs say that the DAC is capable of 192 kHz / 24-Bit, will this only work if I'm using optical, or does this do its job while utilizing analog outputs form the DV-F07?

It also allows for coaxial, again same sort of question applies, what kind of difference does this format make over the other options? I mean at the end of the day, the reciever still outputs via analog connections to the speakers so isn't a lot of these other connections types kind of moot in a performance standpoint?

Any information or ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Audio Cables

The digital optical (tosslink) and digital coax cables are different methods to transmitt the same audio information. There is no difference in resolution, etc. One of these cables is required to hear the Dolby digital or DTS sound track from DVDs.

One minor difference is usually the coax cables are usually more robust than the optical cables that have a plastic or glass fiber that can break. Both cables types are inexpensive from sources like Monoprice.

Also note, the DAC (Digital to Analog Conversion) is only in effect if you are using an Analog output from the DVD player (Red/White RCA connections). I would only recommend this for CD playback because you will only get 2 channels of audio. Also you pioneer elite receiver probably has similar DAC specs.
