Question re: component in, HDMI out?

Can someone help me out here? I have a Yamaha RX-V661 receiver that is attached to a front projector and PS3 both via HDMI. No problem there. I just bought a Nintendo Wii and attached it with the included component RGB cables to the aux video inputs on the front of the receiver and I'm not getting any audio or video from the Wii.

Is this because my receiver can't convert the component signal to HDMI to send it to the projector? If this is the problem how can I fix it?

Thanks, I know one of you guys can help me out...

yes, most likely.

try a component cable from the receiver to the tv

I kinda thought that was the problem unfortunately I kinda hope that not the only solution. My projector is wired through the ceiling and wall with HDMI only so kinda difficult to run an RGB cable. Is there any sort of component to HDMI adapter/converter that could work available?

IIRC, the aux video inputs on the front of most receivers I've encountered are red, white and yellow jacks.

If that's the case for your receiver, then they are not expecting composite video signal. They are looking for stereo audio (red/white jacks) and a composite video (yellow jack) signals. Try either going thru the back of the receiver (along with some kinda audio feed*) or if you're really, really intent on using the front aux inputs for this application, then you're gonna have to use a red/white/yellow audio/video combo cable between the game and the aux port. ...attached to the proper outputs on the game, of course.

If these aux video inputs on the front of the receiver are in fact red, green and blue, then I'm outta ideas.

* (Component video doesn't pass audio - never did, never will)

i missed the part about connecting up front.

but either way, i doubt the 661 upconverts analog sources to HDMI.

then I guess it doesn't matter where he connects them, does it?

He might want to check the manual just in case.

edit: You're right mike. I did a quick google. It doesn't upconvert. strange...

Sorry didn't mean RGB. Red + white + yellow from the Wii going into video + right + left on the receiver. As far as I can tell there is nothing that will convert component to hdmi anyway so looks like I'll be running another cable. Thanks!

then you should be getting audio ... even if the receiver isn't upconverting to HDMI.

did you select the appropriate input on the receiver?

sometimes its easier to find quirks if you start from the top.

1) do other sources have audio and video? (also try something like an ipod or cd player on the front inputs)
2) double check all connections, cables and wires

Will do, thanks.

If the receiver cannot do it, you can always buy an external switch. Lots of companies make them but http://www.gefen.com is sort of the king of the hill. Running a separate set of cables is neater if you can do it without too much trouble but remember you'll have to switch the video input on the projector.
