Question on room loading of speakers

I've just read thru the Axiom Advice thread where it was mentioned numerous times that you could potentially overload a small room with too large a speaker.

So does the same principle apply to surround formats, 5.1 6.1 or 7.1 . Is it possiblle to have a room that is acoutstically too small for a 6.1 or 7.1 layout? If not, whats the difference between this and the front speakers being too large?

I read somewhere that room size bears no correlation to wether or not 6.1 or 7.1 will overload a room. I just can't help but think that the more drivers are present in a given room pumping out the sound that it will it just get messy sounding.

The sound is recorded in such a way on a 6.1 track that it will not overload the room. The sound is blended from speaker to speaker and sounds are placed appropriately to create an effect. It is for ambiance, not all out sound, so I don't think it will be an issue.

Unlike the mains which are continually putting out sound, the surrounds are only putting out sounds on a partial basis relative to the mains and its becuase of that "partialness" for lack of a better word that loading doesn't take place?

Large speakers need a large room. I used to have towers, but I prefer how bookshelves blend with my subwoofer. My room is big enough to accommodate towers, but its a waste.

If your room is 14x10 or smaller, you don't need towers. Bookshelf's convey a large enough sound field to fill the room.
