Hello all i am pretty new to audioholics but im trying to setup my room to watch DVDs in and i just picked up the following

Westinghouse LVM-47W1
http://www.audioholics.com/reviews/televisions/flat-panels/westinghouse-lvm-47w1-1080p-lcd-display-review

Athena Technologies Micra 6 Home
http://www.audioholics.com/reviews/speakers/satellite/athena-technologies-micra-6

Now i am looking for a good DVD player that upscales to 1080p through HDMI and i stumbled across this

Philips DVP5982/37 for $70.00
http://www.consumer.philips.com/consumer/catalog/tree/en/us/consumer/home_entertainment_gr_us_consumer/dvd_home_theater_ca_us_consumer/dvd_players_su_us_consumer/ce/_productId_DVP5982_37_US_CONSUMER/DVD_Player+DVP5982_37?proxybuster=UE3KR1IGQXMEXJ0RMRESHQFHKFSEKI5P

I know the cheapest 1080p upscaling DVD player you guys recommend is the

Oppo DV-981HD for $229.00
http://oppodigital.com/dv981hd/index.html

or

Oppo DV-970HD for $150.00
http://www.audioholics.com/reviews/transports/dvd-players/oppo-dv-970hd

Now considering my situation....
My receiver is a Harmon Kardon AVR 310 which is hooked up to my 5.1 Athena
I simply want a DVD player that can
1) Connect the DVD player through Fiber or Coax to my receiver to pass the DolbyDigital signal to my receiver
2) Connect the DVD player through HDMI to my LCD TV
3) Upconvert a DVD to 1080p
I dont care about that DIVX nonsense stuff i just want to watch DVDs

My main question is can the Philips DVP5982/37 for $70.00 do what i want it to do with a similar picture quality while watching DVDs compared to the Oppo DV-981HD for $229.00 or will i notice a huge difference while watching DVD's

Are there any other upscaling DVD players that you guys recommend at a better price?

Thanks in Advance
Eddie

From reading the Westinghouse page, it seems to up-convert no problem on HDMI.
My question is how far will you sit and if you know that you will still have 480 resolution on the screen with smaller pixels only. Nothing can create more resolution is it is just not there, 480. Are you planning to get into high def DVDs at all? Now they have 1080p on the disc itself:D

PS, hard to go wrong with a $70 player.

I sit about 10 to 12 feet away from the TV and i do plan on viewing HD content when the prices come down so maybe ill have to wait another year or so.

I was just curious as to why this one only cost 70 while the Oppo is like 220

Thanks for the reply

The $70.00 dvd player will use cheaper components than the oppo dvd player costing $229.00 , As for the Oppo company specializes in making these types of dvd players while the philips will cut corners and probably will not yield the same quality picture as an oppo or even other brands that are a bit more.:)
