Question on my homemade M&K subwoofer

Hello everyone,

I just got home from DeepSurplus after buying my Cherry subwoofer enclosure, on Wednesday I ordering a new M&K woofer and SB-1250 250W amplifier. Now for my amplifier to fit I have to get a jigsaw and cut a larger opening to fit the amplifier, but there's another solution to this problem. My VX-1250 Cherry enclosure measures 18" x 17 1/4" x 15 1/4" inches, DeepSurplus has a Cherry sub enclosure same as the one I have now except is measurements are 15" x 15" x 15" inches and will fit my amplifier without any modification with screw holes ready for installation. So my question is how will the smaller (15" x 15" x 15") sub enclosure change how my bass sounds coming from a 18" x 17 1/4" x 15 1/4" sub enclosure after many years???

Best regards,
Techlord. :)

Short answer: My hunch is that you will lose some low end response.

Long answer: M&K designed the subwoofer to work with a certain driver and enclosure. You can see how changing the internal volume will influence the sound by mapping out the enclosure sizes using a program such as WinISD, provided you have the driver specifications. My recommendation would be to cut the larger hole in the original cabinet and then use some acoustic stuffing to make up for the little bit of volume lost by having a larger plate amplifier.

The sub cabinet (15" x 15" x 15") in question is the M&K VX-850 12" 250W, I got lucky finding such an old review on HTM! The sub cabinets that measure 18" x 17 1/4" x 15 1/4" are for the M&K V-1250, VX-1250 and the SB-1250 subwoofers, anyhow the review confirms what you said not that I ever doubted you. Today I'm ordering the SB-1250 250W amplifier and matching woofer to go with my Cherry sub cabinet directly from MK Sound and will post picture when done.

Thank you,
Techlord. :)
