I have a yamaha htr-5760 av reciever and a sony (sa-ve367t) 7.1 speaker system with a sony 8"inch 135-watt subwoofer thats pulls a cool bass!!!
Anywayz I'm new to home theater and I was wondering what is this cross over frequency and what should I set it to???
My manual on the sony speaker system says it recommends me to set the cross over frequency to 150hz, but I heard around that thx sayz people with home theater recievers should there cross over frequency to 80hz, why iz that??? should I do what sony sayz or what thx sayz???
Please somebody help me with thiz.

Also my yamaha manual sayz for me to set my volume on my subwoofer in between 9 and 11 o clock and my crossover/high cut frequency to max,
on my sony subwoofer it has volume and bass boost,
is that the same as crossover/high cut frequency???
and what is phase selector normal and reverse

I know thiz is wayy to much to answer for that im sorry but i really need help on this

weezz,

It depends on the frequency range of your other speakers. If they are small speakers and have a higher low frequency range, you would want to set the crossover on the receiver higher so you don't damage the speakers with low frequency bass. If they are large and have a lower low frequency range you would want to set the crossover on the receiver lower so the other speakers would produce the lower frequencies. However, even though my speakers will handle down to 40hz, I still use the THX 80hz crossover and let the subs take care of the lower end. Just don't set the crossover to low and let your ears tell you what sounds best from there.

Thanks for the reply,

so i guess i have to keep it at the recommended 150hz rather than keeping it at 80hz???
on my speaker manual specs it sayz FREQUENCY RANGE 100hz-27,000hz!!!
and subwoofer reproduction frequency range 26hz-200hz
(remember im new to home theater so that might sound dumb) is that what you meant???
but i notice when i keep it 150hz (actually its at 160hz because my reciever doesn't have the selection of 150hz) i hear unwanted bass, but when i keep it at 80hz it's some what clear.
Also what about the my manual when it said volume and crossover/high cut on the subwoofer???
On my subwoofer it have volume and bass-boost
is that the same as crossover/high cut???
and should i really like it tells me to set the bass-boost to max and the volume level to a little high (inbetween 9 and 11o'clock)???

weezz,

Now knowing you speakers frequency range is 100hz to 27khz I would advise you to set the crossover on the receiver to as close to 100hz as you can but not under, you may damage your speakers by doing so.

:) you can use the THX optimizer on the Star Wars trilogy or other THX-certified DVD's (like King Arthur). it has a sub transition test to help you tell if the settings are a good match.

Does the 5760 have YPAO ? When I did the auto set-up with a Velodyne sub on the RX-V2500, I set the volume on the sub to 12 oclock, and the crossover on the sub all the way up. Once the set-up was done, I cheated and added a splitter on the sub end of the cable to get just a little more boost.

the phase selector can be used for two things... if the sub is behind you, you set the phase to reverse, so it fires opposite the mains. if the sub is in front of you, you want it to fire with the mains. you can also use it in a two-sub set-up if you have some bass cancelling. set one sub to one phase and the second to the other to eliminate the hole in the sound...

ok!!! thankz Doug i think i get it about the crossover frequency

And yes Leprkon my 5760 comes with a ypao
and I have used it, it set my subwoofer to 160hz (my sony speaker manual sayz it should be 150hz unless i put it to 120hz but thatz the closest it can get)
I did what my yamaha manual sayz before i started the ypao.
what is the crossover cut???
on my sony subwoofer it havez a volume and bass boost knob , no crossover/high cut, is that the same as bass boost

Two subwoofers???
How can i put an additional sub on my yamaha???

wheezz,

Yes, I run two subs with my RX-V2500. There is only one output on the receiver, so I have to use a Y-adapter or splitter to run the signal to the two subs. You'd be in the same boat.

kool!!! thankz 4 da info!!!
so u have a RX-V2500 thatz expensive, thatz the reciever I wanted but i was on a tight $800.00 budget!!! so i ended up with the htr-5760 instead...
im a buy me another sub soon i hope, whatz the precautions of a second sub???
do you have 2 of the same subz???
also what about the crossover/high cut on the subwoofer
is that something the yamaha subwoofer have.
because i only have a volume knob, bass-boost knob, and a phase selector switcher on my sony subwoofer...

wheezz,

I got my 2500 for $759 at a local retailer. There's really no precautions I can think of for a 2nd sub. I have 2 identical SVS 20-39CS+ passive subs. In my case, the subs have no adjustments. I control the crossover and phase and gain with the 2500.
