I have a 5 year old Mitsubishi rear projection 48" flat screen 1080i TV (No HDMI input that I could find). I have a crappy $25 DVD player. I will not be able to replace the TV with the projector I want for probably 6 months or so.

Do I get a decent up-converting DVD player, a blu-ray player or leave it alone until the display can be upgraded?

The picture quality is pretty decent but not fantastic. I don't know if its the TV or the player. Assuming a $200-300 budget, what to do?

You did not mention if you have a sound system and that could be a factor. There is already talk about HDMI 1.4 while the best now is HDMI 1.3 something. If you want the latest audio and video formats, I would wait till later for the Blu-Ray player. If you are, or think you might be, into games, the PS3 is worth looking into since it is a good Blu-ray player itself and the gaming aspect sort of tags along. Also, the PS3 has periodic upgrades through downloadable software to improve capabilities and fix problems. I don't think most stand alone Blu-Ray players have these upgrade capabilities but that is something others can elaborate on.
