Question for the guys that were or still are in the music/concert tour biz...

I saw Bob Seger last night and thought the band rocked it. The sound guy did a great job as the levels were better than I've experienced at many concerts. You could hear the lyrics, the backup vocals, etc. Side note, attended a couple of shows where the sound was so bad I was wondering why I was even there.

Anyway, I as they cleared Grand Funk Railroad off the stage to get ready for Bob, I saw two guys climb up into the lights above the stage and take up position. The technical aspect appeals to me so I was wondering with all the electronic systems in place, why you would need two guys manning something up in the lights? Couldn't they do that with a camera-based system from a station back with the sound guy? Do they still man it live so the spot is on key no matter what? I'm curious.

I'm not in that business, but that never stopped me from commenting ;).

Maybe they were lighting guys not sound guys?

Concert venues must vary in what in-house equipment is available. There may have been something in that place to prevent them from doing it by any more automated method.
