Question about using HDMI with surround receiver

I have a Samsung DLP with HDMI inputs and optical output. Using a DVD player or cable box, both connected using HDMI and using the optical output to my receiver i cannot get my receiver to recognize any Digital Audio. It just stays in ProLogic modes or DSP modes. I want it to switch to Dolby Digital or DTS depending which is available of course. I'm using direct connections now to my receiver, but why wont it work?

HDMI is far from standardized today.

Not all HDMI equipped with HDMI I/O do sound yet. Prehaps with 1.3, but for now I'd suggest you just run either Toslink or a digital coax line for audio.

. . . From the source (DVD, satelite, etc.) directly to the receiver.

Good catch.

That's what I meant but I did a poor job of communicating it. I'm glad one of us is awake.

The optical out on the tv is for running the 5.1 to the receiver if you use an over the air antenna for HD.
