Question about Time Warner HD

I got the new Toshiba 42HL167 today at a pretty nice price but won't be here until tuesday but just have some questions about the HD setup.

I just cancelled my Directv as they wanted $300 to add HD to my current DVR setup and time warner gave me a super deal the second I mentioned I had directv when I called so the installer will be here next friday. So my question is the following: I will be using an hdmi cable to connect the tv with the HD DVR box and was wondering if this would interfere with also using the optical out to connect to the receiver for DD 5.1. I am just wondering since hdmi passes sound as well if it would only do one or the other.

Also what is a good dvd to calibrate the set once I get it. On avs people use DVE or Avia and was wondering which is the better one to get. I also have a toshiba 1080i upconverting dvd player and was wondering if calibrating it for the hdmi ports using the 1080i feed would be best.

Right now all that will be hooked up to it will be a Wii, PS2, DVD player (hdmi), HD DVR (hdmi) and I am trying to convince my wife that we need a ps3 for christmas for the bluray.

I still do not have an hdmi receiver as I am waiting for all the new Yamahas and Denons to come out before I make a decision but I've read that the scientific atlanta HD DVRs will not allow for hdmi pass-through.

And now to order a bunch of cables from monoprice :)

It depends on the set-top box. My SA HD box doesn't even have HDMI. If you use an HDMI cable to connect the set-top box to the reciever then you don't need an optical cable.

You'd need the box to be able to separate the audio from the video only if you wanted to connect the HDMI from the cable box directly to the TV with audio going to the receiver.

I have both AVIA and DVE and they are both good. AVIA is a little easier to navigate but DVE is half the price. It's really a toss-up but if I had to pick only one, I'd probably go with AVIA.

Ahh ok well my current receiver does not have HDMI so I am going to have use hdmi to the tv and optical to the receiver. Plus from what I have been hearing about the boxes time warner uses you can't have hdmi pass-through to a receiver. They have to be connected directly to the tv for the hdmi to work. I was just wondering if having both hdmi and optical going connected was going to interfere with each other as they both carry sound.

The time warner guy told me when I called that the new boxes they use now have hdmi so maybe they will swap one out if you want the hdmi.

You shouldn't have any problem using optical for sound and HDMI for video, this is exactly how my parents have their SA 8300HD Time Warner Box connected, works like a charm.
