Not only am I new to this forum, I'm pretty new to the world of home theater. I've been trying to do my research for the last month and feel pretty solid on the receiver I want to buy, which is the Onkyo TX-SR605. I like quite a bit about it, from the HDMI 1.3 jacks to the fact that it will be able to take input from my older equipment (crappy $50 DVD player, PS2) through composite and component and output it to HDMI for a recently acquired TV (Sharp Aquos 32" 720p/1080i). I'm guessing that I'll acquire better equipment over the next few years which might take advantage of what the Onkyo can do (PS3, 1080p TV).
But I have one final remaining question that might seal the deal... I'm having trouble finding out exactly how its "multiroom capability" works.
What I'm looking for is to be able to run 5.1 in the TV area as Zone 1, then be able to run the remaining two speakers to a separate part of the house as Zone 2... AND be able to have each zone doing different things at the same time. For example, the I'm watching and listening to TV in the theater area while my wife listens to music in the kitchen.
I know that many of the current mid-level receivers will do this (for example, the Yamaha RX-V661), but Onkyo's site hasn't been all that helpful in figuring out exactly what it will do... it just gives checkmarks for "Powered Zone2" and "Zone 2 line out."
Has anyone who owns the TX-SR605 tried this out? I'd really appreciate any help before ordering something over the web that I can't find locally...
Thanks...
Andy
