question about reciever settings for speakers.

i have 2 RTi8s and a PSW10, the two RTi8s are about 3 feet apart from each other, and the PSW10 is right next to the left one, and i was wondering about settings on my reciever for these.

1) should i set them to 'large speakers' or 'small speakers'?
2) what should the sub crossover be set to on my reciever?
3) should i have the frequencies below that crossover go to my RTi8s AND my PSW10?

and a couple for the subwoofer:
1) what should i have the volume set at on my subwoofer; and
2) what should the crossover be set at on my subwoofer (i just put it on 120 Hz cos i figure the reciever or the subwoofer should be determining that, but not both.

Set them as small and start off with 60hz crosover on the receiver since the -3db point is 40hz.Only the sub should get below the crossover point.This benefits the amp and the speakers.Start off with the sub volume about half way and turn the crossover knob all the way up.

I agree 100% with Brendy,

Receiver;
1) Speakers "Small"
2) Crossover "60Hz"
3) Below 60Hz to Sub only

Sub (assumes your using your Receivers LFE to Sub);
1) Sub volume at Half Way (this one you may have to tweak)
2) Sub Crossover maxed (Receiver will handle X-Over)

Works for me :)

thanks. so this goes the same for music and HT?
also, there were a couple more settings:
-speaker priority (PRch or SBch?)
-subwoofer phase (normal or reverse)

i'd also like an explanation as to what the heck these are!

maybe, maybe not.

Depending on your receiver's bass management, sometimes a sub that blends well with HT can be overpowering on music. You may have to either re-adjust the sub levels as needs dictate or get used to it.

PR means presense speakers. SB means surround back. This is for a 7.1 set-up. It is apparently asking you which set-up you are using.

Subwoofer phase is used to get the best bass response based on sub location. Normal makes the sub work with normal polarity. Reverse, reverses it. I prefer to use normal and find the best location for the sub to get the best bass response.

ah. thank you. one last question; what does changing the size of the speakers on the reciever do?

It determines where the bass of a particular channel should be sent - to the speaker or to the subwoofer, assuming you have set subwoofer to 'yes' or 'on' (whatever terminology your receiver uses).

Small - send the bass below the xover to the subwoofer and not to the speaker on that channel.
Large - send the entire full range signal to the speaker.

This is one element of 'bass management' in modern receivers.
