Question about Pioneer VSX-1015

On the Pioneer VSX-1015 you can set the crossover for the subwoofer from 50hz-200hz. My question is if you set the speakers to large with the subwoofer off the crossover still only goes down to 50hz, does this mean your speakers are only allowed to go down to 50hz? Or by havin no subwoofer do all the frequencies automatically go to speakers?

thanx

If you set your speakers to large, the x-over is not used. The x-over is only applied to speakers that are set to small.

That had me worried since I plan on gettin bigger speakers and not using a sub for music.

You can leave your speakers set to small and use the "direct" mode. This should bypass the speaker settings and allow you to listen to music without the sub. That's what I do when I feel the need to.

The physical size of your speakers doesn't mean you won't benefit by setting them to small still. You should just set them to use as low of a crossover as your speakers will allow. The 1015 doesn't have a spectacular amount of power, so driving serious speakers off of it full range with a lot of bass may be too much for it.

I have the 1015tx and if I set my speakers to small, even in Stereo and Direct mode it sends bass to the sub. Perhaps mine was a lemon (my impression of direct was zero signal processing), but I'll have to check on the manual for that. I'll get back to ya.

Is there a "mains+sub" setting in the speaker setup? That may still affect the direct mode. Some receivers allow this, and the 1015 may be one that does. I don't have any direct experience with the 1015's bass management.

What exactly do you mean by "direct mode"?
On most recent receivers, there is a "direct" or "bypass" mode that ignores all processing inside the receiver and also usually bypassing things like tone controls and bass management for a clean signal.

It doesn't bypass the speaker settings either but you have a different receiver so I'm guessing it depends on the models.

Interesting. So what the heck does direct do on the 1015 then?

From what I can see it disables the auto and manual MCACC. No equalizer, I think all the distances and levels are back to zero. Enhansers like Loudness and Midnight are also disabled. The crossover and speaker sizer however are untouched.
