Question about new 8k Receivers

Hello everyone,

I have a question about receivers and I want to apologize in advance for the long post.

I want start by saying that I am not an audiophile nor do I have extensive knowledge of how to build a theater system. That said I have been researching these past 3 months on what is required to build your perfect system and I think I have almost all the components down.

Here is a little background as to why I decided to build one. When the new PS5 was announced I decided that it was time to replace my old 48 bravia with a new 4k TV. I did a lot of research as to which tv would be good in 2020 and after days of trying to decide between the sony 55" X900h and the LG CX oled, a new offer for a 65 X900h under $1000 showed up and I bought it.

As you can imagine one of the reasons why I wanted the new TV was to be able to use the Hdmi 2.1 features of which the sony has 2, (on being the dedicated eARC).

With the intro out of the way here is what I want my speaker set up to be

Center channel Klipsch RP-504C
Front L/R towers w/ Atmos speakers Klipsch R-625FA
Surround Klipsch R-41M
Sub Klipsch 12" 400

I read everywhere that the most important speaker should be the center channel so I wanted a little more power for that one.

Now here is the problem. Originally I was waiting for the new 8k receivers so that I can connect everything through that and keep my system clean but as we all know that didn't work so well. Now, and I know I am weird about that, I don't ever plan on purchasing another console as I am happy with Sony (maybe a Nintendo system but I feel like they are always running 2 generations behind) and I know that all the 8k receivers work with PS5. That said I refuse to purchase a defective system because I can always change my mind and I want it to work out of the box.

So I need your advice. Do I wait and purchase an 8k receiver for the one console I will end up using or do I plug my PS5 in the second hdmi 2.1 port and by a SONY STR-DN1080 and plug it through eARC?

The reason I am asking has to also do with price. Over the holidays there are tons of discounts on speakers (and receivers) and I would like to take advantage of that. However, I don't want to buy the speakers and then leave them in the box until I can connect them 6-8 months later, and if I don't do that I may have to wait another year until I can afford to buy the whole system.

Again, my apologies for the long post and if you have made it this far, I really value your advice on the matter.

Thank you!

Yep the 4k avr plan is a decent one but if you get one of the new avrs that will get updated, could be a consideration....I'm not a gamer but I'd probably still plug the console into the avr depending on what codecs your tv can export....and in general I'd let the whole 8k/HDMI 2.1 thing settle out before buying into it.

Thank you for the reply. I think I will go ahead with the 4k avr plan then. I have the x900h and I want to make use of the hdmi 2.1 that is why I was thinking plugging directly to the tv is best. The TV supports eArc and so does the Sony receiver (SONY STR-DN1080). I can connect the earc with an hdmi 2.0 and have virtually the same thing. I guess I wanted to make sure that I am not creating lag (as an example) by plugging directly to the tv and then moving the sound via eArc.

Thank you for the reply, I really appreciate it.

Can't help you with the lag thing, just not something I've ever contended with/needed to contend with. The Sony avr supports eARC/HDMI 2.1? Or does it not matter particularly for eARC if the avr is not HDMI 2.1 (which I don't recall it being but could be wrong)?

From what I have read it doesn't really matter as I am 100% certain that it doesn't have hdmi 2.1 and it says that it is earc supported.

Yeah was just checking out the 1080 page, it makes sense as long as it comes over hdmi the avr would be capable of whatever audio it carries. I haven't delved into it much yet...still haven't even gone 4k due a few reasons nor do I have need for ARC at all.

I think a thread like this involving gaming is the only reason to talk about 8k. Otherwise Fukk 8k.
As far as lag, I think there would be less lag going through the AVR set to pass through with no processor. I think going to the tv, and then back to the AVR will create some lag from processing, and syncing the audio and video. I’ve always gamed through my AVR’s and never noticed anything, but I’m more casual about it so mmv.
