i got a 150w subwoofer with my ht receiver and it connects to the receiver with just a rca cable, the sub has one hole for the cable and the receiver has one hole, the sub out. but i wanted to know if i could hook it up to a 2 channel stereo receiver through the subwoofer out. on the stereo receiver it says sub pre out L R so can i just plug it into one hole either the L or R and it will work?

No that is not going to work. But then again I am a little bit confused as to what you are tying to do? What is your end goal?

It would be much easier to help you if we knew the model numbers of your sub and of your receiver, or even pics of the input/output jacks. Not many receivers (if any) have both a left and right sub output, but it will work. I think you are supposed to use the left (white) output for mono listening, or else you could possibly get a y splitter, but I don't know if that would work or even make a difference.

Hans18 is right. Some more info is needed to answer your question.

my sub doesn't have an L or R output it just has a line input and you connect it to the sub pre out on my receiver. so could i connect it to a sub pre out that has L R?

Are you trying to decide which of the two receivers to use or trying to use them both?

For the one receiver that has a single sub pre-out, I'm sure you know you can just connect that to the sub line in and be done.

For the 2 channel receiver with both L and R sub pre-outs, you could likely use just one of them. In general you don't want to combine two outputs into one (1 into two is fine) but since we are talking about a sub signal you probably can use a Y connector to combine the two outputs into one for the subwoofer because the bass is likely going to be the same in both channels. Try it both ways - you can't hurt anything.

If you are trying to use both receivers, with the 2 channel receiver driving the sub, then that will be complicated. You would have to split the sub pre-out from the main receiver with a Y connector and feed it to a line level input on the 2 channel receiver (aux, cd, tape, etc). But then you are back to how to send the 2 sub pre-outs to the one subwoofer line in as above.

The back of your sub needs to look like this: (picture below)

You would hook your receiver's speaker wires to the "in" on the subwoofer. Then more speaker wires would go "out" to the speakers. If your sub does not have these types of terminals, you won't have the bass management for good sounding bass.
