Question About Hd Sound

I thinking of getting the Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD Player to go with my Hitachi 55HDT79 plasma. Seems to be a good basic player and all I need is 720, will also use to upconvert SD dvds. My question is concerning HD sound, the receiver is JVC RX-8020VBK which can do DTS-ES and DD-EX. I have a second receiver to handle the rear surounds. Will I benefit from the Dolby True HD or DTS HD? Or is that a all new receiver thing. I will still be able to get great sound, yes? Thanks for your help, told myself I wasn't gonna get into this HD DVD stuff when I bought my nice, big TV....but...;)

You would need at least HDMI 1.1 repeating on the receiver, which you don't have. Since the Latest slew of HD DVD players don't have 5.1 analog output it puts those that have receivers from a couple of years ago out in the cold.

Cool username by the way.:)

I think DD & DTS are good enough. Sure you could go "all the way" with PCM, DTS MA, & TrueHD. Sure 1080p would be nice. But 720p, DD, & DTS are good enough for most people.

I'm watching "Day After Tomorrow" on blu-ray. It is capable of 5.1 DTS-HD MA. However, my system cannot extract this, so I'm just listening to plain DTS.
You know what? This plain old DTS sounds a lot more impressive than a lot of Dolby TrueHD & PCM Uncompressed audio I've heard.

Some of us just gotta have 1080p, 7.1 PCM, 7.1 TrueHD, & 7.1 DTS-HD MA. Some of us just gotta have both blu-ray & hddvd.

But 720p, DD, & DTS is just fine.

So, say I use the digital optical out of the Toshiba to receiver, I will get the same sound I'm used to now? But with the possibility of a DTS sound track included on the HD DVD? But no enhanced sound, beyond what I get now on SD DVD? But I will gain HD picture via HDMI direct to tv.

Yes, I believe so. I've heard people say that DTS on HD discs will sound better than DTS on SD discs. But I bet that if they did a blind test, peope would not hear the difference.

Here is my personal experience. I had a Harman Kardon 247. I also have a Toshiba HD-XA1, which has HDMI, Coaxial, & Optical audio outputs. I hooked up both the HDMI & Optical audio & watched Matrix Reloaded on HDDVD. The HDMI was Dolby TrueHD & the Optical was plan Dolby Digital. What I'm about to tell you is the aweful truth. I could not believe it. I don't know if it were the Toshiba's inconsistancy with the HDMI or the Harman Kardon's problem.
But I actually thought the plain Dolby Digital via Optical sounded better than the TrueHD via HDMI! I sold the Harman Kardon. Now I have absolutely no audio via HDMI or digital audio.:D

I've done a few comparisons with TrueHD vs PCM vs plain DTS & DD. They all sound great. Very similar sound. But let's just leave at "They all sound great".

Oh, yeah, picture via HDMI is recommended. I think it's better than Component video, but my brother does not agree. He cannot tell the difference between HDMI & component video.

Does nit have 6/7 analog audio inputs to handle the analog out from DVD-A? If so, you can take advantage of the hi res audio on HDDVDs by letting the A2 do the decoding.
What does the 2nd receiver do exactly with the rear channels?

"What does the 2nd receiver do exactly with the rear channels?"

The main receiver is 5.1, added the 2nd receiver to the "pre out" to add the rear surround [the main drives the side]field for 7.1.

Thanks everyone for all of your help. I think its time for a new toy :)

Yeah, get the new 7.1 TrueHD/ 7.1 DTS-HD MA/ HDMI 1.3 receivers. The cheapest one is $400: Onkyo 605.

But if you want DTS-HD MA, you need to wait until Christmas for the new HD players.

Well, I think for now the only movie studios who use DTS MA are Fox, Lionsgate, & MGM. There may be others. But I think these companies only make blu-ray.

So for blu-ray, you have PCM, DTS-HD MA, & TrueHD.
For hddvd, you have just TrueHD.
