Question about "Green Glue" used in between Drywall....

A friend of mine used this in his Audio Room and highly recommends it. I am building a 36 X 16 HT for movies and figured up the amount of GREEN GLUE that it would cost to cover that area per their websites "calculator" and it was over 1,000.00 for "Normal" coverage.

Is this really worth that much investment??

What other options are there that are equally effective, but cheaper?

Thanks for the help.

You fail to show your entire sound isolation "system". Glue, board and insulation by themselves are ineffective isolators. That being said, the primary purpose of the glue is to make the two boards (typically 5/8") act as one. I do not believe that there is a significant proprietary isolation effect of the green glue itself. There are a number of adhesives (mastics) that will bind rock to rock (actually paper to paper).

The purpose of the Green Glue is NOT to act like a glue. Rather, it is an viscoelastic isolation layer that allows the 2 layers to act separately and turn some of the vibrations into heat while still allowing the mass to do it's job. It is a VERY effective isolator.

Now, for deep deep bass, there is an additional step that should be taken. That is the physical isolation of the walls of the room from the other rooms beside and above. To isolate from above, build the walls 1/2" short and use PAC International DC-04 clips. To isolate from the other rooms around, you can do things like

- a staggered stud wall so the inner and outer drywall for the 2 rooms do not share studs
- RSIC-1 clips to buffer some of the vibrations from transferring if you don't have room or can't redo walls, etc.

The other thing not to forget is the details like caulking EVERYTHING (outlet boxes, switches, between drywall joints, where wall plates meet the floor, etc. Door seals and solid core doors are also a must.

Think of the room as an aquarium. It doesn't matter where the leak is or how big it is - you're getting wet!

As long as the adhesive remains somewhat pliable, what's the difference between "Green Glue"?

Go to AVS and search for 'AVS vs Peanut Butter'.

The 'difference' is that GG has done all the testing and presents all the data. Other people have tried to do the same thing but don't get the results across the spectrum - especially in the bottom end.

It really is a superior product. It is FAR superior to mass loaded vinyl between drywall layers and at less than half the price.

According to thier data it out performs channel mounting the walls too. I picked up a case for the only interior wall that i have on my DHT project. I'm using it between 2 layers of 5/8ths drywall. I'm not going for all out sound killing, just doing my part to keep it from being aburdly loud in the next room. I will be chaulking pretty much everything as well.

To sum it up:
I looked at all the research out there on the various products and felt this was a good buy.
