question about fixed crossovers?

I have a pioneer vsx514k reciever and JBL stage fronts with JBL E30 surrounds, along with JbL sub10 sub, my question is, my receiver doesn't have an adjustable crossover under 100, it goes 150 then 200. All I can do is set the sub out of range and rely on the 100 point, how can I set it lower by bypassing the reciever short of buying a new reciever?:D

The receiver has xover points of 100, 150, and 200 Hz? That would be pretty odd. A 'fixed' xover would be one single value that you cannot change.

One way to bypass the receiver is to use speaker level connections to the sub but that creates additional problems because you then have to connect the front speakers to the sub (and set the front speakers to Large in the receiver).

Another way would be if the sub has line-level inputs that do not bypass the sub's internal xover. Typically, a sub input labeled 'LFE' will bypass the sub's internal xover and is what you want to use if the receiver is handling xover duties. If the sub also has other line-level inputs, you could use that instead of the LFE input.

Say the receiver was set to 100 Hz but you want a xover of 80 Hz. If you connect the receiver sub pre-out to the sub's line-level in and set the sub xover to 80 Hz, the receiver will send roughly 100 Hz and below to the sub but the sub will reproduce only 80 Hz and below.

The sub book says once you connect the LFE connection, you cannot adjust the crossover, I think that disables the use of the crossover knob. Thats what I understand about the manual.

That is correct. I'm saying you can do what you want IF the sub also has other line-level inputs that do not bypass the xover. Some subs do, some don't.

Cool, then I guess I can connect both front speakers to the sub then, because I want to know how much of a difference it will make. Despite the sub only going down to 50 Hz, lol.
