Question about depth measurements for receivers

How are your measurement taken for receivers (specifically I am interested in a Yamaha)? For example, is the depth measurement taken only for the "base" part of the receiver? Or is it a complete measurement from front to back (including the speaker connectors in the back and the volume knobs in front)? This will be impacting a desicion on which receiver I will be buying because I may be cutting it a little to close with my shelves. Thanks.

Normally the measurements are for the maximum dimensions, including all the switches etc. In addition to the specified size, most amplifiers require around 10-15 cm of space above and to the sides of them for ventilation.

Thanks. Yeah above and to the sides isn't an issue for me, just the depth. I was hoping that the measurements were normally done as maximum dimensions, but didn't want to assume this.
