Is it preferable to use dipole speakers or monopole for the surround/rears channels in a 7 speaker setup used primarily for movies? Why or why not?

Each speaker has it's uses. Each speaker fills a need.

If your seating is right up against a rear wall then dipole rears can help diffuse the rear sound-field. They are also used when there are two rows of seating. A dipole side surround can be placed between the two rows of seating.
