I'll list some that I like the sound quality and music both.

Spock's Beard - V
Cake - Fashion Nugget
Joe Satriani - Joe Satriani
Joe Satriani - Black Swans and Wormhole Wizards
King's X - Dogman
Morphine - Yes

Not a complete list and not perfect recordings by any means but I like it.:)

It's always seemed to me that the dynamic range and punch of the drums was really impressive in the Tool and A Perfect Circle recordings.

If you go for the orchestral goth-rock, stuff like Within Temptation's The Heart of Everything is pretty impressive.

The remastered NIN Pretty Hate Machine is a cleaner sound for what was already a very dynamic album

Lastly, I like the variety of influences present in Wolfmother's Cosmic Egg which is a modern recording as well.

Three Doors Down...The Better Life
Nickelback....The State---track 5,8 good for testing imaging. Lots of left/right panning.
A good subwoofer test cd is Sick Puppies...Tri-Polar

I think Queen's Innuendo deserves a place here too. Or at the very least A Kind of Magic.

I figured I would have gotten a constant stream of Pink Floyd, Steely Dan and Porcupine Tree...

Good Job Guys.

I've started digging through the CD collection from memory...Mixed bag really.:)

Oleander's song "Why I'm Hear" sounds real good.

Great song! I remember listening to that on the way into work back in 1999. Unfortunately, while I wasn't listening to the words, the buddy that I was driving to work was. See...I was driving him to work because he had stayed at my place the night before after his long-time girlfriend admitted to cheating on him. About a week later, he might have loved it...but not 12 hours later.

FWIW, a few other CDs that I do enjoy in the rock genre (and I've never thought about complaining about the SQ) are:

CCR-36 All Time Greatest Hits
The Who - Quadrophenia, The Who By Numbers, Tommy
Styx-Kilroy Was Here

As a side note, with the Who I have "The Ultimate Collection", and it's interesting to hear the SQ change from songs like "My Generation" to "Won't Get Fooled Again". I also don't think highly of the recording quality of The Who Sell Out, which is also an earlier bit of work.

moe.
I have most of their stuff.
This studio version of 'Plane Crash' has a 50 second intro you'll have to suffer through.
From the Album: Tin Cans and Car Tires.

Ghost Reveries by Opeth
:) Absolutely. I've had that album for a while and loved it, but I just ordered the 5.1 special edition of it on Amazon yesterday. I can't wait! Very spacious, beautifully dynamic and production quality is great.

Rick, this one is for you, seems like it's right up your alley. Listened to it last night.

Zappa is ...well...Zappa. Either you like him...or not. But the SQ for "One Size Fits All" is excellent (don't judge by the YouTube recording).

PS-Zappa is pure genius on guitar. Anyone not familiar with him should listen starting at 2:00!
