Quality Portable player - FLAC compatible

I have a Samsung Note 2 phone. I find decent in music, used the earphones provided with the phones.

What choices do I have for a good quality player, that costs no more than 200$? One that plays flac. IPod does not play flac from what I am aware.

Or, should I just get a good head set?

Check the apps available for your Note 2 - you can probably get a music player that plays FLAC files - one like Poweramp or Rocket Player or similar. That should make a difference in the sound quality.

You might also try an upgrade of your IEMs/headphones to see if that satisfies you. Lots of choices out there to consider. Check out the headphones forum here or head-fi.org for lots of info on headphones of all kinds and prices.

While iPods can't play FLAC natively, they can play the equivalent Apple Lossless format ALAC. So you'd have the same quality music files if you go that route.

However, if you want a better player, a couple really nice choices are the iBasso DX50 or the FiiO X3 - both within your $200 budget and both play FLAC and higher resolution files.

Or you could upgrade both - a FiiO X1 which runs just over $100 and then use the remaining cash for some better IEMs.

One final note - if you go with one of the FiiO or IBasso players, you'll need a micro SD card to store most of your music - they have very little on-board memory.

This is very good advice. Upgrading only the player doesn't give you much improvement, if any.

I use Neutron Player. It is excellent.

I definitely second getting better headphones, plain and simple. The Note 2 should be a solid FLAC player.

Ive tried only average ones so far. Sony (80$) and Sennheiser PC8. Both were pretty decent.

I would like to get a really good quality headphones. Preferably with surround.
Any suggestions?
  • I would like to use it both with Amp (PC source) and phone.
  • Bass should be solid. So prefer ones with extra but quality bass! Always seem to want more. :)
  • Mid range something like my PSB T6 should be fine.

I'm only interested in the Over the ear models. It should completely fit the ears.

Budget $150 (Live in India).
Here are a few choices I have (Budget less than INR 15,000).
1. Amazon India
2. Flipkart
3. http://www.sudeepaudio.com/category/headphones

That link is 8500$. Was that meant for me? :) :)

I dont play games. My phone will be used only for music here.
I have a receiver. Sometimes watch movies middle of the night. So cant play loud. This is where I'm hoping the headphones come in. Can I get a really good headset for both movies (surround) and music (stereo)?

I can sacrifice Surround. Dosent matter if it aint there. Will consider purchasing one later just for movies. For now music is my priority.

Shure SE215-K is InEar. Big no for me. Considering to get an inEar for the gym.
The headphones i'm looking for now has to be over the ear.
Sennheiser HD 598 is on my list now. But, from reviews that I read, it lacks bass a bit. I like for it to be punchy and tight. Especially the mid-bass. Not sure if this can give me that. It should also have a wide sound stage, decent mid range (don't think i like it laid back). PSB T6 was kinda perfect for my mid range taste. HD598 sounds perfect except for the bass.

Yes, 598 would be a great choice as well. They seem like easy to drive even by a smartphone

do i have any similar choices? Headphones similar in quality to 598 but with the extra bass. (Not crazy overwhelming bass)

I guess that would be - audio technica ath-m50 which in my opinion had too much bass. but then again I like neutral aka closer original not colored sound.

Thought about it for a while. Got a demo a few models and decided to settle for the tried and tested HD598.
I can live with a little lesser bass. Will try a few software equalizers for a bit of bass boost. Any recommendations?

I'm 100% sure about FLAC, but I love the hell out of my Sandisc player.

I recall dumping my entire media library on there without converting anything. Double-Check though.
