Being a little funny, but a real question. Are these a good diffuser?

Yes, I know a quadratic diffuser, or skyline math is better, but in general are they quantifiable by our ears considering the cost over something like Ikea storage shelves. Everyone one anecdotally says books are great diffusers. So is a two year olds mess on the floor. The cost of legit products for 20% room coverage nears the cost of some "throw-a-way money" cables. Are these the new "snake oil"? Am I really going to "suck out" one frequency range because my squares are the same size, or is it just going to scatter them regardless if the "wells" are sufficiently deep. In short, can you hear the change by installing two quad diffusers that are 2'x4' at best in the back of an average 20' room.
