PSB Speaker Opinions

I visited a local showroom recently where 5.1 set up of PSB speakers was on display for auditioning. They sounded reasonably good considering the room was acoustically treated and quite small. Has anyone had any experience with this speaker line? If so, your opinions are appreciated.

I'm a huge PSB fan. I own the previous generation Image series speakers and am very pleased with their smooth detailed sound, expansive yet focused soundstage and their ability to play most music genres effortlessly while providing great dynamics and linearity for Home Theater use.

I have a lot of experience with PSB from my original Century system to the T and Image series to the Synchrony.

I preferred the Synchrony 1's that I heard over the comparable Paradigms I demo'd. The Image series is great bang for the buck.

PSB opinions

I recently embarked in a quest to upgrade my old Klipsch speakers and spent a lot of time auditionning and researching.

I eventually chose the Synchrony line and more specifically the Synchrony One B (bookshelves) fronts and Synchrony C centre (S for the satellites). I use a subwoofer and I cross-over at 80Hz in the receiver as per THX recommendation so I felt I did not need the towers.

I can't even begin to describe how satisfied I am with those speakers. My only negative comment is that the finish is a bit fragile and is easily damaged.

From what I could hear and research, these speakers are top tier for their price range. I am sure that you can buy better speakers for quadzillions of dollars, but I don't have that kind of money :D.

That being said, choosing speakers is a very personal decision, and what sounds good to me might not sound so good to you, so listen to alternatives before you buy, including speakers out which are not within your budget just to compare. Don't rely on specs and research alone.

PSB makes great speakers. They should always be on an audition list.

I have a pair of PSB Alpha A/V's that I bought 10 years ago that I love, and have recently bought the Alpha C1 center, that sounds great. These are both at the bottom end of their line, and for the price, I think they can't be beat.

Paul Barton is the man. I have their T45s and love em. Recently listened their Synchrony One monitors  just fell in love with them. Now I'm thinking about upgrading to new image series.

Anyone here ever owned Image 2b's???

Just picked some up used for $125. They sound great, although for some reason they sound muffled in my Yamie's Pure Direct mode. Does anyone know how old these things are and how they have changed in the newer lines??

I have the 1B as my surrounds and they use the same tweeter as your 2B. These are 2 generations old. Listening to them in pure direct mode is shutting off all the coorections made by YPAO to come up with a particular frequency response based on your setting made when running YPAO. One thing you may want to try is to see if one of the tweeters are damaged. Play a piece of music that has lots of treble and cover the tweeter with your hand and then remove it again. If you don't notice a drop in loudness in treble when the hand is covering it or not, then the tweeter has gone bad.

My T45s which I use as my mains sound quite different between pure direct mode and when YPAO is engaged. When listening to two channel stuff like vinyl or CDs, I prefer the warmer side and play my T45s in direct mode. Its a personal prefrence.

If the previous poster is right about having a bad tweeter I found PSB's US distributer very easy to deal with in getting a new woofer (for my Alpha A/V) when I had one go out. (Electrical storm took out my receiver completely, and one woofer.)
