PS3 won't detect my WD MyBook Studio External Drive (500GB)

it was formatted NTFS ... does that have anything to do with it?

both my work and home PC detect the hard drive fine.

Format it to Fat32. The PS3 only reads Fat32 when thing are directly connected. I have heard good things about this program in reaching that end...

That should solve all your problems. If you have more than three folders nested you will need to be under the proper subheading on the XMB and hit triangle and display all or the folders will appear empty.

thanks!! winxp couldnt format fat32 so i tried ntfs anyway ...

ive heard swissknife (thanks for the info/link) could do fat32 :)

ok, so it will probably better to make just 3 folders : music, pics and vids :) thanks

one more thing, i inserted a 4gb flash disk on the ps3, while it detected the flashdisk, it said it was empty inside, i guess that was because of what you said that the XMB couldnt detect more than 3 folders ... will try again.

I used Fat32format. Worked like a charm. Swissknife wouldn't work for me.

windows wont format that big a drive with fat32. swissknife did work ... but apparently, it doesnt like other USB drives plugging in or out while it is formatting (and it pretty much &^*^s it up. i was halfway when i discovered that. had to use windows to reformat, shutdown and try again with swissknife.

first try, i had three folders ... music, pics, vids - loaded all my music.
went to ps3, HD detected. it said "no files" inside
brought the HD back to my PC - the files are all gibberish.
quick format.
loaded 1 folder, inside a few songs.
detected and played finally!

had to reformat
