I broke down and pruchased the PS3 (40 GB) version and can not get it to connect to my network. the PS3 finds the netwrok and i enter the SSID and keycode and it seems to time out before connecting.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

It would help if we knew a bit more about your network... What kind of router, where is it placed? Did you check all the network settings on the router and the PS3? (if they aren't in sync the PS3 can be really finicky, I've found) Check the PS3 forums at us.playstation.com, there is a really good network guide for wireless.

What is your encryption method? (WEP, WPA, WPA2?) Also is your SSID being broadcast? And last but not least what is your router make and model? If your PS3 keeps knocking you out of the PSN you might have to foward and open a few ports on the router but I can run through a quick and easy tutorial.

I found the PS3 to be slow over my wireless G network and sometimes unable to pick up the signal even when my laptop in the same room showed a strong signal. I ended up moving the router into my living room and giving the PS3 a wired connection. It seems much faster and more reliable.

To answer someo fthe questions:

Router is a Netgear B/G I think) and is upstairs in a bedroom and the PS3 is on the first floor in the family room.

I'm using WEP and it seems as though the PS3 is picking up the signal as it found the network and a 70 - 80% signal strength.

I think I checked all of the router settings but I'm not sure. I really am not a Techie per se, just a wannabe.

I'm not sure if the SSID is being broadcast, how can I determine that?

Thanks again.

go into your router setup and see if there is a tick box for broadcast SSID. Unless you have specifically told your router to not broadcast your SSID, then it would be broadcasting it. But if you can see your router on the list of available wireless networks then you would be broadcasting your SSID.

Reset the router

I have run into the same problem as you on my PS3. I had to uplug the router (PS3 off) and plug it back in, wait for it to boot and then turn on the ps3. After that it would work. I was using a Linksys router. I did get tired of getting shot in COD4 before I even seen the guy come around the corner so i hard wired it. So much better!!!!! I only had to do the router trick a few times over the coarse of a year, not sure what caused it but it worked for me, hope this helps. Good luck.

Yeah the Netgear web interface is pretty rubbish compared to other brands like Linksys and Belkin. Is the router a netgear Rangemax by any chance? I used to have one and it just refused to play nice with the PS3 and Wii so I had to replace it with a Linksys WRT54G. If worse comes to shove I would suggest putting DD-WRT in your router instead of the stock netgear one as it will give you better control of settings and such.

Totally agree about Netgear. I switched to Belkin several years back and I've never had anymore troubles.
