i am looking at buying a refurb 60gb ps3 that plays ps2 games backward compatible (is it a good idea or should i go for a brand new is there any difference at all)
since i will be using it for blu ray as it will be in my ht room, i wanted to make sure that it lives up to stand alone bd player or atleast comes close
if the the pq is just slightly better of a stand alone then i dont care(cuz then i get to play games as well on ps3) but if its a lot better than i will drop the idea and go for stand alone bd player.
so pls give me ure valuable feedback
i will be using it with the marantz 6003,panny ax200 with a 120" screen

If you're into games, then it's a no-brainer.

Also remember that a PS3 runs much faster than a regular player, so you might want to be careful with a used machine.

Just my two cents.

thanks bob u are the man, always helping ppl out

i am into gaming but at the same time it is essentially for my ht room thats the reason i dont want to compromise too much on the pq/sq department
and will be using it on a 120" projector screen where i have heard the difference might be noticeable if there is any
regards

Video wise, my Oppo BDP-83 and the PS3 look more or less identical in 1080p for Blu-ray. I don't think you are going to notice a big difference with movies for PQ.

how is the SQ compared to the stand alone?

are u comparing the oppo and ps3 on a big projector screen or a flat screen?

How is there going to be any difference?

It's illogical to think so. HDMI is the same signal going from the different devices.

Get the Ps3 if you want to game some. Get the samsung 200 dollar player if you want to watch just movies.

The oppo is very nice, but if you are on a budget I don't suggest it.

VQ at 24p Blu Ray should be identical between players. Some players such as the Pioneer players add artificial sharpening and boosted contrast, most people want the video untouched with processing though.

SQ should be identical between the PS3 decoding and sending as multichannel PCM vs bitstreaming and having your processor decode.

If upscaling of SD DVD is a factor, the PS3 is good but the Oppo is noticeably better. For SQ, I don't have HDMI capability on my receiver, so I can't compare them directly but the audio via analog is very good on the Oppo. As was said, if they are both feeding your receiver via HDMI though, the receiver is processing them and should sound pretty much the same.

PS3 all the way. I have a 80gb PS3 (the newest, non-backwards model) hooked up to a marantz 6001 and it sounds great. If you are going to game, I wouldn't even think twice of getting the PS3 as a bluray player. My friend's dad is using a PS3 as a bluray player in his home theater room hooked up to a projector and the PQ is great, I wouldn't think that a different player would make that much of a difference.

I've been using my 60G for the last 2 years for both BD and games. Up until the Oppo, the PS3 was the most logical choice for me as well. I bought it for gaming and BD was just a bonus. For a gamer, the choice is clear.

As others have said. If you are connected via HDMI, there will be zero audible or visual difference between the two.

Go with the PS3

Although I don't use mine on a projector, I am a huge fan of PS3. I got mine a couple years ago for the same reason you are interested in it. The only difference that I see in the PS3 and other BD Players, is that the PS3 loads them much faster.

I don't care what the BB guy is telling you. I have not had much luck in finding anyone in a BB that REALLY knows their stuff.

I think that if you get a PS3 you will never look back!! Just my .02 :D

I will take exception to statements that all bdp's look identical. Well, maybe they do when you have a small viewing angle, with say a 50" from 14'. But, I will agree, even if not perfectly identical, with how good BD is as a source in general, by far the limiting factor is the display. This linked test is now old enough where it could not have included BD60, Oppo, and others, but you will see that only Panasonic passed every test. The PS3 didn't, the 350 didn't (identical video to 550), nor the Pio's or Sammy. The Sammy did worst in failing at least two HQV tests.

While the Panny is the only one to pass all, it does however suffer the greatest shift in color points. I've even started a thread asking about saturation levels of different bdp's, but from the limited response I've received, it doesn't seem like a good tree to bark up at. The Panny is already three generations old. I'd expect the present ones to be even better. After all, they're the ones that own the majority of BD patents, and their FW support seems to be indicative of that as well.

OTOH, if you want to game, well then DUH! Just get the PS3. End of story, game over, enjoy.
