I've got my first HT 5.1 system being delivered this week! I already got a PS3 and an Xbox. I was going to use my PS3 as my Blue ray player. Couple of questions:

1. I'm trying to determine if there are any advantages to getting a "real" blue ray player in lieu of using a PS3...such as sound and/or picture? I'm getting an Elite SC-07 receiver and a Pro-151FD TV. From what I know, the Elite blue rays come with a jitter reduction feature, but not sure if its worth it.

2. If you hook up the PS3 with HDMI cable, do you need a digital optical cable still? My Xbox is not an elite, so I guess I would need to get the optical cable in this case since I got composite cables?

Thanks:D

1. No the PS3 is just as good as anything else out there. Cost would be the only savings

2. No. For an optical cable or any other :)please go to www.monoprice.com.

The PS3 is one of the best Blu-ray players as well as DVD upscaling players available for the money. It's also probably the fastest loading. Advantages to Blu-ray players are often quieter operation and IR control (PS3 is bluetooth only unless you get the Nyko Blu-ray remote kit which has a IR receiver that connects to the USB interface on the PS3). Blu-ray players also fit on your shelf easier and need less room to breath, but if the PS3 is going to be in that room anyway what difference does it make? Sound and Picture on the PS3 for Blu-rays is top notch.

You can purchase an adaptor for the Xbox 360 that will convert the multivideo output to HDMI.

There may be other more cost effective rendetions of this product.

I have been in a toss up about what to get for a Blu-Ray player as well, and it came down to either a PS3 or the new Oppo - 83.

I would have gotten a PS3, but incorporating bluetooth remote would have been a pain, and it has a fan. Other then that it is an awesome player, and the network capabilities are spectacular, I borrowed one from a friend and loved the PQ, loading times and streaming music and movies.... very cool....

I ended up getting a Oppo because its getting great reviews, actually has IR - easier for me and I already have other methods for streaming music and movies. The load times are really fast, compared to the PS3 and its silent with no fan... not that you can really hear the fan on the PS3.

good luck with your decision not sure you could make a mistake here..

Just so people know, the Oppo has a fan too, it just doesn't come on automatically like the PS3s because the PS3 has a lot more going on inside that needs to be cooled. I can hear my PS3, but I have it in a closed rack so I don't reall notice it unless it is a very quiet passage.

If you have a Harmony remote you can get this. Mine should be here next week as it was on back order.

I was wondering about this unit.... I'm curious if I could learn the IR codes to my pronto, if that was the case I could see getting one of these to add to my system, otherwise I just can't make that unit work for my system.

Thanks for the heads up, though with it in my cabinet, I highly doubt I'll ever hear it or even know the fan is running :)

My PJ puts the PS3 to shame with noise. :p

You can't buy games for the Oppo either. And I'm betting you're a gamer. If so this is a no brainer. Resistance Fall of Man is the bomb.

For someone who already has a PS3 it's pretty hard to justify purchasing a stand alone Blu-ray player.;)

I did :) And the PS3 cost more.

I agree with the others though, if you intend to use it for games, the PS3 is a no brainier.

Couldn't agree more... If your a gamer which I am not, I couldn't justify getting a second outboard BR player, that would be just stupid....

I totally love the PS3, the all in one unit to me is priceless.... but the complications of having so many remotes already for me is overwhelming, and trying to integrate the ridiculous BT deal just seemed more of a pain in the buttocks to me.... :)

There are multiple solutions for PS3 remote control. I use the PS3 for blu ray but if I wanted to drop a G it would be the TOL elite to match the display. I also want my sd dvds passed unaltered via HDMI with no convresion . With the display the OP is getting conversion isn't important. The tol elite offers the best 24p playback I've seen relative to a matched display.
