Sony had the brilliant idea of using BlueTooth for the PS3. In short, that means that no universal remote will work with it. You have to use the PS3 controller.

As stated, the PS3 has no IR or RF sensor for a remote to use. It only uses Bluetooth technology, which means you have to purchase a PS3-specific remote. No universal remotes have Bluetooth.

I imagine we will just have to wait a few months. It still likely means that we will need a USB/IR adapter for the PS3, but it has been more than a few people that have been irked that the only current remote available is Bluetooth and not IR.

I'm waiting... till then I use the controller and it does alright.

I've been using the Bluetooth remote for a while now and it works great.

There will be an adapter released that allows you to use the previous PS2 controllers with the PS3. That means you could use the old PS2 DVD remote with IR and then program those codes, though I don't know that you would get every function on the bluetooth remote... In theory this should work at least for basic functions, though you wouldn't be able to turn the PS3 on/off with an IR remote because the "PS" button didn't previously exist.

Come on, $20 for a remote isn't a big deal. But it does irk me that I USED to have all my compnents controlled by my Harmony 880. Now I have to have 1 more remote on the table to watch movies. Yet another reason why I hate Sony. Seems like Sony really wanted to stick it to consumers with things like a specific remote and specific component video cable.

I do like my PS 3 though.

I think bluetooth is the way of the future for remotes. For gaming consoles for sure...I really like that they took this step and so far it works very well. Now if they would just make the controllers a little better....

The one thing about the Sony remote that bugs me is that my old remote has "pause" right below "play". But the Sony remote has "stop" right below "play". I keep turning off the movie when I mean to pause it. Oh well.

Yep, me too....that is why I like backlit remotes. It isn't a bad remote, just not a great one.
