In the course of trying to calibrate my sony 60" XBR 1080i using the THX screen adj procedure sourced from a PS3, I found that it was not displaying the BTB test pattern. I followed the instructions in Gene's article (
http://www.audioholics.com/tweaks/calibrate-your-system/hdmi-black-levels-xvycc-rgb) but when I changed the HDMI output from Auto to YCbCr on the PS3 everything was tinted pink & green once I loaded up the Revenge of the Sith SD-DVD that I was running the THX screen optimizer from. Now this wasn't a little bit off, and I was not able to adj it to anything close to normal with my display's color controls, so something is clearly off. If I put it back to auto mode & reload the disc, everything is back to normal.
Interestingly I tried the same procedure on my HD-DVD player and it displayed the BTB no problem.
My current receiver is a Marantz SR8500 with no HDMI support, I am in the process of evaluating a new AVR (really like the yamaha RX-Z7), so the PS3's HDMI output is connected directly to the displays DVI input using a HDMI to DVI converter on the PS3. The HD-DVD is connected to the SR8500 via component cables. The output from the SR8500 to the display is also component.
From what I read, there is no difference in HDMI and DVI video signals, so I don't see why this would cause a display issue, but perhaps that is the case? Obviously the display can handle the YCbCr input from the HD-DVD/8500 or I would not see the BTB test pattern, so why would the colors be so off going directly from the PS3 to the display?
Thanks in advance.
