"Perform a system software update to renew the encryption key." is what it says when I try to watch Star Trek.

It's my sister's system. Somebody else set up the PS3 so I am completely clue less.

Is the system gonna blow up?

Under one of the menus on the left hand side of the XMB (the bar you scroll around on) will be an option to look for a firmware update. I would guess this is what it is referring to?

Haven't seen that exact message before, but it would seem that it is asking for access to BD Live and it won't connect because firmware 3.1 is available now. If you/she hasn't updated, you won't be able to log in. You can go into the BD options and turn off BD Live access so it doesn't ask and that may allow you to watch the movie without having to do the update. If you want to do the update, it is the very top of the options menu on the XMB. I installed 3.1 last week and have had no issues with it so far.

Alex, can I quote you "I am completely clue less" :D

Seriously here is the answer on what to do:

http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/2_60/video/aacs.html

It is system upgrade to to renew ACCS( Advanced Access Control System) copyright protection used on BD . The encryption key peridically expires and has to be renewed; no cost that I know of.

Peace,

I haven't seen that, most likely because I keep my system updated. It means the PS3 needs a system software udpate.

Alright. My laptop is connected to the internet via wireless magic and I found an ethernet wire to hook my laptop up to the PS3 but there must be more voodoo to do as the PS3 says it's not connected.

You can't hook your PS3 to the laptop for it to get internet access you need to connect it directly. Your laptop cannot act as a router. You need to plug the wire into your router and the router into your PS3.

The PS3 can connect wireless to your router also! ( or you can use a hard-wired Ethernet cable).

If you have a WEP code on your router you will also have to enter it on the PS3.

The setup of the PS3 to your router is very similar to the way you setup your laptop. The screen navigation is a little more awkward on the PS3, but pretty straight forward one you do one or two things.

Good Luck!,

Edit: Too late. Got fed up and decided that I'd rather chew sand.

the PS3 has wireless too. Just set it up using the menu screen. Or call the previous poster and make him hold your hand through the process.

If it has WEP, all you need to do is automatic detect/setup and plug in the key.

What's WEP?
I don't think I have it.

Mr. Man,
Under Settings all the way down is Network and under Status list it says that the connection method is Wired but there are not options there.

I have nothing indicating that this is wireless friendly and I'm ready to choke lsiberian ... "Just set it up using the menu screen." ... What do you think I been using, a bug screen? :D

WEP is the router enryption key, if the router is secured you have to enter it; if not secured then no WEP or WPA key needs to be entered.

All PS3's should have Internet option.

The "status" is what it currently is. if your want "wired" fine, you have to go one more down to "Internet Connection Settings" to change.

Isiberian thought you were using the screen on your house window. But becareful with them also; they come off much easier thantheygo back on

Good Luck! and sorry you are having trouble!

Wait, what version of PS3 is this? The original 20G does not have wireless. If this just happens to be one of those, then there would be no wireless option - wired only.
j_garcia,

Thanks for info on the original 20G.

Again, good Luck Alex, sorry you are having problems.

If you have a router modem that came with the internet provider, it may be on the label. I assume your sistor won't tell you what it is.:D

Under Settings all the way down is Network and under Status list it says that the connection method is Wired but there are not options there.
If 'wired' is selected already, may be the easiest way is to get a Cat5 cable that is long enough to reach your router. You can bring the PS3 to the router too but then you need to hook it up to a monitor in that location (hopeful you have a small one nearby) so you can see what is happening. Using the wired method you do not need the 'wep' key.

If you don't want to buy a long cable and cannot borrow one, then follow Mr. Garcia's link and go the USB route. I assume you do have a USB flash drive right? To use USB or any other storage media, be sure to select 'system update (the first one under 'setting') and then select Update via Storage Media.

Okay I got it sort of. I found the right screen. I have the WEP but the key board is funky. It found the network ... I'm getting there but it's tough. I may be the single most retarded person in the history of A/V.

I'll be back later. I just wanted to say thanks ... even to lsiberian. :D

Dude, it would have been easier to have ordered that BD60 from Amazon and had it shipped to your sister's place. :D

You can't hook your PS3 to the laptop for it to get internet access you need to connect it directly.
His laptop, or are you talking in general? I connect my TV and blu-ray to the internet via my MacBook.
