There's not really a simple answer, I'm afraid. It depends on what you want or need from your player. The PS3 is still a very, very good player, but it isn't the right fit for every situation.

If you have a receiver that supports HDMI audio, you don't mind the PS3's interface (bluetooth remote that makes using a universal remote tricky), and you want to play games on it, the PS3 is an absolute no-brainer.

If you aren't fond of the bluetooth remote or if you have a surround system that lacks a receiver with HDMI audio support, then a standalone player with multichannel analog outputs makes more sense than the PS3. That would lead you toward options like the Panasonic BD80, Sony S560, or OPPO Digital BDP-83.

Gonk pretty much nails my opinion. If you are into gaming and have an HDMI equipped receiver for sound, go with the PS3.

My receiver is old enough to not have HDMI but still is a very good receiver. I don't have much time to dedicate to gaming so that is not a factor. So I needed the option of 7.1 analog out for sound. Hence I was looking at the Oppo BDP-83 and the Panasonic DMP-BD80.

I bought the Oppo BDP-83 as a unit I could trust to last a long time and serve my needs well. It arrived this morning and I just want to watch it but I have obligations that will prevent me from doing so. Ergh!!

The question is simple but the answer can be tricky.:D Based on the fact that your AVR-354 has the latest AV features including HDMI 1.3a, I can think of at least the following possible answers to your simple question:

1. Oppo 83 - Except for the super hi end players most people would probably say the Oppo 83 is the best BD player, not the PS3.

2. PS3 or LG BD390 - If you already have a universal player or a player that can play SACD and DVD-A and you do value streaming, quick response, and other functionalities, then I would still say the $299 PS3 (vs $499 Oppo) is the way to go. The LG BD390 is a good alternative too.

3. Pansonic DMP BD60 - If you don't play game and do not care for any other function other than just watching BD movies then I would say the $130 Pana DMP BD60 is the best, based on price.

4. Pioneer BDP-320 - If you want the BD player to double as DVD player and insist on having upscaling capabilities that rival the Oppo, then the $230 Pioneer BDP-320 may be your best bet.

The Oppo has much better lab test results in both HD and SD video as well as audio. It is considered an universal player. It plays all formats of DVD and CD including DVD-A and SACD discs. In real world situations (watching movies and videos) it is possible that not everyone can see the difference in either picture quality or audio quality.

Nothing specific, but examples are the top Denon, Sony and Pioneer models that sell for $1000 to $4500. There are more expensive ones that go for $10,000 or more. Just google for expensive BD players and you will find a few quickly. Some of them are, like the Oppo, universal players.

Examples of some hi end but not too expensive models:
