I don't know what it is but I can never get the PS3 to output in PCM audio, it always only says "Stereo" on my receiver. I'm hooked up with HDMI and I've tried setting it to Linear PCM and Bitstream on the PS3 and no luck. What gives?

Try to do a manual sound setup-

1.Sound Settings
2.Audio Output Settings
3.HDMI
4.Manual
5.See what boxes are checked

You might want to also try pushing the STANDARD button on the remote when the uncompressed data starts coming through, hit select when the movie starts and you can see in the top right corner what is being decoded by the PS3

Also are you talking about music or movies? I have the same setup as you and I get PCM, and for music I get 88.2kHZ and PCM 176 Stereo

Do just as Stripes says...and you might need to restore your console if that doesn't work. I have never heard of anyone having these problems...and don't worry about bistream because the console cannot do that..at least not with the new HD-codes. But the manual set up is going to be your best bet...

What receiver are you using?

There are several receivers out there that have HDMI inputs, but those HDMI inputs are limited to the same audio signals as a S/PDIF connection. In other words, the HDMI inputs can only accept Dolby Digital (EX), DTS (-ES) and 2-channel PCM signals.

Double check that your receiver can actually accept multi-channel PCM via HDMI first.

It's sad and frustrating.

Some receivers are nothing more than HDMI switches and do not process the signal at all. Some process the video, but not the audio at all. Some are limited to S/PDIF format audio (like I mentioned). Some handle multi-channel PCM audio at 5.1 channels. Some handle multi-channel PCM audio at up to 7.1 channels. And some can accept any audio format, including the new "HD Audio" formats.

Too many possibilities, but that's the sad reality.

So first, make sure your receiver is actually capable of accepting at least 5.1 PCM audio via HDMI. Then, go into the PS3's "Sound" settings tab and select to set it up manually. Chose HDMI, then go through the list and put a check mark beside all of the compatible formats. Finally, under the "Video" settings tab, make sure that HDMI audio is set to output PCM.
