PS3 as a MP3 player for home stereo?

I am looking for an MP3 player for my home stereo. I want a digital connection to my receiver and it must be easy to use. I don't think a computer will work. I want something my wife can operate easily. My thoughts were to get a PS3 and the remote for it. I have never used a PS3, but I would think the interface would be user friendly. I am not sure if I will have problems with DRM. I have found few articles regarding the PS3 as a home MP3 player.

Is the PS3 a good idea for a home MP3 player or is there a better way to go? I would prefer to spend less, but the blu-ray player does sound like a nice feature.

The ps3 works fine. I use mine to stream music from my computer to my HT. If you want something a little less expensive check out this podcast. It contains steps to make a pretty simple music player.

If you use the ps3 to stream music the order of your songs in each folder won't be the same on the computer and on the ps3. I am hoping for a firmware update to fix that though, but if you use an external HD plugged into the unit it should be fine (just remember to format to Fat32).

Ps3 as mp3 player

I would definitely recommend the PS3 for an mp3 player. Your wife will love the visualizations, and there's always the killer sideshow options to impress her.

I've been using an Xbox 360, and am quite happy with it.

If that is all you want it for, then as mentioned, there are less expensive ways to do it already. If you want it for other reasons too, then by all means, it will do a decent job.

Have any of you guys with a ps3 tried spinning a redbook cd in it yet?

Yes, sounds like any other CD player to me (via optical). I don't have it hooked up with analog, but I may have to do that so I can see how it does with SACD.

I did a bit of research on this very topic a while back, and concluded the PS3 would do well as an mp3 player. But if you're going to use it exclusively for that purpose then there are cheaper options.

Of course, the PS3 is also a decent Blue Ray DVD player, as well as a decent gaming system, so you get a lot for your money. Plus it comes equipped with HDMI, so you can easily connect it digitally to any HDMI capable receiver. It can take external USB drives, so can always add more capacity if you fill up the internal 60GB drive. It also includes built-in WiFi, so you have some networking options that further enhance the solution. The recent $100 price drop only sweetens the deal further.

A couple of weeks ago I actually had one in my shopping cart at BB. But my son talked me out it, simply because there so few games available for it, and because he there are a couple of really awesome Xbox 360 games he really loves. But if games are not your primary concern, then it can't really be beat as a multi-media HT gadget. I highly recommend it.

One more thing; I think the optional remote is Bluetooth, so I don't think you will be able to use any ordinary universal remote with it unless the universal supports bluetooth.

Decent Blu-ray player? It has been shown to be right up there with the best on the market currently, meaning as good as those $1200 players.

yep... pretty damn good deal :) I don't think it has all the features of those $1200 systems, but damn!

The only thing that upsets me so far (got one 3 days ago) is the BT remote. It pisses me off that I finally got rid of all my remotes using the Harmony and now I have two remotes again.

Another minor issue is the controller; I like to play racing games and use the right trigger for the gas. The design of this right trigger on the PS3 makes my finger slid off of it...

I have yet to watch a movie on it; maybe tonight.

Not too fond of the triggers on the new controllers either, but I've sort of gotten used to it. Works great for Motorstorm :D
