Hi,
I heard that the new 80 gig ps3 starts shipping in September for $399, which is how much the 40 gig is now. I have saved some Amazon points so I think I will be getting the new 80 gig when it comes out in September. Could someone verify what I have heard is indeed true?

The MGS4 PS3 is $500 and is 80GB. You get a game, twice the storage, backwards compatibility, two extra USB ports, a multicard reader, and SACD playback for your extra $100. I don't need any of those things, so I have a 40GB PS3.

Last I heard Sony stores were clearing the 40GB PS3s for $299. Definitely a super great buy at the price so check that out.

They are still at $399 at Sony Store. They are also out of the MGS4 80GB PS3.

The current 40 gigs are going to be phased out and be replaced with 80 gig hard drives, but will still lack backwards compatibility, and still only have 2 USB ports, and no card reader or SACD capability, and will still cost $399.

The 80gig will play most of the older PS2 games thorugh software emulation. There are also a couple of additional USB ports. The pS3 mades a very good BluRay play and connects well via hDMI or component.

Make sure to download the lastest software upgrade after you purchase!

40g

I would suggest getting the 40G and then using the extra money to change out the hard drive for a bigger one. 40 or 80Gs isn't that much space when you start compiling a blu-ray library. For $100 you can get a 7200rpm (instead of PS3s 5200rpm) 250G hard drive.

If you don't need the extra features, then I agree, go with the 40 and upgrade the drive. I have a 60 and with movie downloads, I am at the point where I am going to have to upgrade. I have the 320 hooked up to mine, but copying the purchased media is not allowed via XMB.

I only picked up a couple of Anime titles to try the system out, but when you go to them, copy is not an option. I thought I rented them, but it says no expiration on them. I will have to try purchasing something to see if it will let you copy it, but I'm guessing it won't, just like installed game data or purchased downloaded games cannot be copied.

I am pretty sure once the $400 80GB hits the older 40GB will be cleared out at $299. Get yourself the 40GB on closeout and a Toshiba 250GB 2.5" SATA HDD for $100.

You unscrew the back of the PS3 where the hard drive resides and pop out the old one. Stick the new one in the same way and boot the PS3. PS3 will detect the new hard drive and ask you if you want to format. Download newest firmware and you are done!

A 7200rpm 2.5" hdd is a waste for the PS3. For one it will be louder, require more power, and will offer nothing beneficial for what the PS3 does with the hdd. Also a 5400rpm 2.5" with 2 platters will be just as fast a 7200rpm with 3 or more platters in almost every test except on burst tests.

If you have an external drive, you also have a one touch backup - then you just restore it once the new hard disc is installed with the OS.
